As per last years threads it’s always the last Friday of March, regardless or “pure” RD or deferred EAs.
So, do the decisions come out all at once and not in waves?
1.What are the majors most Likely to gain admission?
2.Percentages?
3.Percentages of admitted GPA?
4.How does Michigan weigh GPA?
5. How much do EC’s and Essay weigh in on acceptance?
Any other detailed info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Michigan doesn’t admit by major, but by School. Back when we attended orientation, Michigan’s representatives mentioned that 75% of LSA students would change majors at least once. So LSA majors upon entrance aren’t given a lot of value.
Some of your answers are located in the CDS. For example, the CDS breaks down GPA’s for enrolled students:
Percent who had GPA of 4.0 | 37.8% |
---|---|
Percent who had GPA between 3.75 and 3.99 | 54.5% |
Percent who had GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 | 6.5% |
Percent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 | 0.7% |
Percent who had GPA between 3.00 and 3.24 | 0.4% |
For clarity, one wrinkle with this is CS, which is an impacted major that you do apply for, whether in LSA or COE. If you apply for CS, you are first accepted to UMich when everyone else is, and then, roughly 10 days later, receive a Yes/No on CS. If it’s a No, at that point you have the choice to attend UMich as something other than a CS major, or not attend.
They’ve changed the rules/process a few times in recent years to make it increasingly difficult to become a CS major after the fact. I’d have to double check but I believe the current situation is that it’s basically not possible. Said another way, if you’re hellbent on majoring in CS and are not admitted as such, don’t attend.
I’m just a parent of a junior, so definitely not an expert. However, during the info session we attended at Michigan, the AO said they do NOT weight GPA at all. Rigor is considered completely separately. This seems to be slightly different than many other schools.
After that, I went down the Google rabbit hole trying to get more information about the GPA calculation. I saw somewhere (don’t remember where now) that Michigan calculates an applicant’s unweighted GPA based only on math, science, social studies, language arts, and foreign language grades, and possibly drops all freshman year grades. If this true (and it might not be), then A grades in electives would not be counted and a student’s UW GPA might actually be lower than they think??
Thank you for all of that useful information. Much appreciated.
@MomSon2029 @aewlmom According to the website, Michigan calculates using all classes in grades 9-11, not just core subjects.
We will convert all first-year applicants’ GPA to an unweighted 4.0 scale using all classes in 9th through 11th grades, and we use only the absolute value of the grade in the recalculation process (A+ or A or A- = 4.0).
We review the number of demanding courses separately, and during the holistic selection process the rigor of the applicant’s curriculum is taken into consideration.
Amazing – thank you for this. Just goes to show that you can’t believe everything you read online!
We try to be factual on here. But if not sure always email admissions to make sure.
Question - the postponement to RD, UMich requested my daughter’s 1st semester grades. We requested them from the school, but I am not sure they will be delivered before 2/1 (because the semester just ended, grades aren’t available until Friday). Does anyone know if this is okay if they don’t receive it before, say, Feb 2 or 3rd? Thanks!
Postponed candidates likely won’t get a decision until late March. So no worries if past 2/1.
RD apps are due by 2/1.
This is correct to a point and was confirmed with admissions. The example was getting a lower grade in a gym class. If an engineering student it probably won’t be looked strongly but if it’s for kinesiology, it might. If the lower grade is related to the major that is when non core classes come into account.
Regular Decision application is due Feb 1st which is tomorrow. Get the application in.
Good Luck.
My kid applied RD, about 3 weeks ago. The day EA decisions came out, got an email “How to communicate your continued interest in Michigan” with link to a form to be completed by March 1. Seems weird that he just submitted application and we have to do this again. They already have his first semester grades, etc… Is this normal? Everyone get this?
Call /email admissions since he probably got this by mistake. Confirm with them. No, it doesn’t make any sense.
Yes. Our D25 has a resolve button active which optionally (requires) a LOCI . Same as you said. RD submitted. All material submitted in time. But, asking for an optional LOCI .
What do you mean by “optionally (requires)” a LOCI. Do you think that RD applicants, assuming all have this button, need to submit a LOCI to realistically have a chance? So, sort of akin to one of those surprise “optional” portal essays that some other schools have?
Maybe the button is just there for everyone in RD because of the large numbers of deferrals to RD, but nothing is expected of RD applicants…
If anyone knows, does the LOCI historically make a difference at Michigan for the EA apps deferred to RD, if anyone has noticed in the past?
Sorry for all the questions. A lot of thinking out loud.
At this time of application season, our family has umich at top of the list. As RD applicant, if umuch or similar college is asking for a document and says optional, in our heads we are thinking we “must” do it and it “might” improve our chances. (Though LOCI may not have anything more than the RD we did few days ago). This may not be the same for other families who have good safeties or even equally good schools already in hand. While there are other families like ours, I did not mean to say , ALL should that consider the word optional as requires
Thank you for clarifying your thoughts. This is exactly what I am wondering, is it “optional” in the sense of a de-facto requirement for RD applicants, to show interest and/or to take advantage of additional space to sell oneself to admissions.
I understand if it’s a mere technological issue, that the button is there for all RD because so many now in RD were deferred from EA. But otherwise, if it’s a de-facto requirement for RD apps, akin to a surprise essay, I find that rude. Just saying…
