My son lived both north and south campus. North has large parking lots. Bus service is great also but if you get a guest pass on games day’s your car is right by the highway. You miss all the traffic plus you get to take the bus back with your kid from the game off of central campus. That’s truly an experience. Pro hint… Hold on
How’s the dorm food?
It’s about what you’d expect, by which I mean “fine.” I have one kid in South Quad, the other in North Campus. Both have in-cluster dining, all you can eat with your swipes. There’s more variety at the place in South Quad (more stations i.e. different food types) but even in Bursley (the dorm in N where the food is) it’s fine.
There are also things like Panda Express where you order/pay Ala carte.
My kids have slowly but surely supplemented more with off-campus food over the course of the year. But it’s more about being bored with the same old same old than that they don’t like the food.
For next year, one of mine said they definitely will get the full meal plan again. The other is looking forward to cooking in their house so will be getting a more limited plan.
We’ve eaten the food on visits. Like I said, “fine.” They’re not going to win awards for Best College Food.
Quick question, upthread the increase in apps is discussed. Has there been any data whatsoever released on the number of admits for class of 2029? I haven’t seen it, but figured if anyone had, it would be one of you all. Just wondering.
In the fall.
There’s a Chipotle about a 1/2 block off Central Campus.
The amount of stuff on the edge and just off campus is frankly incredible. Downtown AA is so chockablock with restaurants (hi and lo), bars, shops, etc. and it’s all right there. Love it! And then of course off the SW and SE (especially) corners there’s more. And off the NE a few blocks is the Arb.
Can I go back to college please?
One of my favorite places on campus.
What’s the situation re:textbooks?
I asked the droids and they haven’t had to purchase a single physical book. Everything is either on the web or PDF. Not clear if they’re pirating any of that, and I didn’t ask.
ETA: one did purchase a physical copy of King Lear for a Shakespeare class bc they preferred it that way. But they were not technically required to.
I doubt the textbook situation is any different at Michigan compared to other universities. Most are available in digital versions, which is a nice change from having to handle heavy books. My current college kid (not at Michigan) most recently purchased about half the books new and found the other half, digital versions, on a particular website. Still tends to buy small paperbacks for English/literature types of classes; it just depends. Digital books tend to be less expensive than paper ones. Amazon may or may not be cheaper than the college bookstore - I suggest checking both.
Most college bookstores subcontract to Barnes & Noble, including the Michigan bookstore. Handy feature on some other college B&N websites: if you go to the college’s bookstore website and enter the student ID and term, you can see the required and optional book list for the courses for that term. Unfortunately, I don’t see this feature on the Michigan B&N site, maybe because I don’t have a student ID to use, though it appears that one can look up the books by course ID.
Keep an eye out for news on: SEVP Certification.
Especially if Michigan joins the Big Ten Mutual Defense Compact.
I miss Ulrich’s. IYKYK.
Had to break away from, watching the college nestegg continue to drop, to look it up.
Wasn’t my intention, but probably necessary here.
Ulrich’s was a special spot on campus, the creaky wood floors, the great selection of Mich merch, even standing in line with all the other students and getting a stack of textbooks so large Ulrich’s had boxes on hand for you to carry everything. Ah the good old days.
Hopefully won’t go this way…
