Yes, well I guess that’s my question. Is admissions actually “targeting” these high schools (i.e., attending them is a plus) or is enrollment from these schools high simply because they are larger and test-in (which means the student body as a whole likely tests/performs well). I suppose it’s nether here not there, at the end of the day, but the concept of feeder schools was new to me! (And, for what it’s worth, it looks like my kid is at one.)
So both. They will evaluate the performance over 4 year’s at Michigan. At some point they have enough metrics to see that “X” schools kid’s are successful at Michigan. I am sure all colleges do this to the same to some degree. Again, they want kids to be successful. Michigan is a very tough school from first semester on. I know many student’s that really struggled their first month/semester /year there and these were all very high Stat kid’s coming in.
I also think the article above states that is for like 50% of the accepted students from those 300 or do schools.
One thing I hope they are transparent about this year are the metrics related to Ross applications. Now that it is a completely separate process from the general application process it would be valuable to future applicants in order to make an informed decision about whether to apply to Ross at all.
My D applied dual degree to SMTD for dance and LSA for biology. She was rejected from SMTD today. Her application is very dance heavy. She hasn’t yet sent in her letter of continued interest for LSA but plans to do so. Should she mention the rejection from SMTD and how it doesn’t impact her desire to attend the school?
Applications to U-M’s Ann Arbor campus for the fall 2025 semester hit a record high with more than 115,000 prospective first-year and transfer students looking to enroll. The record-total includes an increase in first-year applicants from in-state, out-of-state and international students
I have 0 expertise in this, just one small experience to share. My S applied for a dual degree at Oberlin, so he submitted an application to the Conservatory and one to the College. We haven’t heard anything back yet from either, but when he asked a question about his app on the College side, they answered his question, but said what they mostly wanted to know was if he would still be interested in the College even if he doesn’t get into the Conservatory. Given how prominently they asked that question, it seems like UMich may also want to know if your D still wants to be there absent the dual degree in SMTD. I would probably explicitly address it in the LOCI.
I would but maybe differently. How will she use that creativity that she has to be a productive, active, engaged student on campus? I am sure there are student groups, activities to fill those voids. Maybe disappointed but not out.
If I can just vent, LOL, I am so over this. Ready for it to be done. I know that means he is leaving to go somewhere, and that will be hard (I have an older son, I have done it before) but boy am I ready.
Totally understand. It’s a grind for parents and students. The funny thing when our son went away to college( Michigan), we already did it with out daughter at a Lac. We were definitely ready for it with him.
He joked around and said “Hope it’s not too hard on you when I am gone” sweet.
The day we got back from Ann Arbor we had friend’s over for dinner in our backyard. The next day we went to a Cubs game we live a few blocks away). The next day was a play and so on. When we talked to him later that week he asked us what we were doing. We said “not much” .
