University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

The “good/bad” deferral letters have been discussed here over and over. Just check out last year’s thread. Or the one before that, etc.

Has anyone who was deferred got any acceptance letter yet?

I’m a little skeptical of the 15% EA acceptance figure cited above. Seems way too small, given what I’ve seen locally. Anybody have an official, UM generated source for the EA acceptance rate?

I think the EA admission rate is not officially disclosed as I could not find it everywhere. I may ask the admission office to see if they have any data. Nevertheless, the EA admission rate for in state appeared to be much higher. I know quite a few students got accepted even with below 25% test scores (but around average admission GPA). UMich has been accepting more in states students in the EA round to ensure a high yield rate.

The 15% figure is plausible. At least 8 students applied at my school(in-state), and only one student got in. That’s a 12.5% acceptance rate (if not lower). Also, I heard from a friend of the family in Illinois that the vast majority of the 50+ students who applied got deferred. In fact, she said “everyone got deferred”, but I’m sure a few got in. It would be nice if UofM published the EA numbers.

I’m sure quite a lot of the deferred students will eventually get accepted though.

Anyone know when we start to hear back for deferrals? I got the “good” deferral letter but was just wondering if anyone knew when decisions will start to come out

Do making the national merit finalist list and very strong fall grades help the cause of a deferral candidate? Any precedence?

No clue how they’d even know if I was a finalist. I listed myself as a semifinalist on the common app, but maybe they didn’t read that.

Got deferred from LSA preferred Ross…
I literally don’t know what the admission officers are thinking…they seem to have deferred all Chinese from mainland with a SAT over 2300 (at least from what I know…)Anyway this was frustrating after I just got a deferral…Good luck to those applying RD~

Got the best deferral letter possible, but I’m kind of hesitant to send in my semester grades as I’ve had a serious senior slump. I got a 32 on my ACT’s, 3.55 GPA unweighted, and a full load of IB’s and honor classes for the last 4 years.

That being said, I probably got somewhere around a 3.3 GPA this semester, which will probably take me down to around a 3.5. The “nice” letter only seems to recommend sending in your scores to help make you “stand out”, but I’m worried about standing out in the wrong way. How necessary is it that I send in this semester? Is it essentially required? If it isn’t necessary but it looks bad, what would look worst, a noticeable decrease in GPA or failure to send more grades?

Every year- these deferral letters- dissecting good and bad- STOP.

They don’t mean what people think they do. There are no good, no bad- just different.

People need to stop pretending they actually know things they don’t. It is unkind, especially because- at CC? There is that absolutely gorgeous search feature. Where you can see the same type of people, posting the same things about the letters year after years- and being utterly incorrect.

So please? Stop.

And that smallish rant was not directed at the poster above me. LOL

“Good deferral letter” = oxymoron

I have a quick question. I have a 32 and a 4.2 and was deferred. I got all A’s this 7th semester, except for one B plus in AP Calc. My GPA with the B plus is a 4.6. Will the B plus hurt my chances, or am I freaking out over nothing?

Just checked wolverine access. My deferred daughter got accepted in the last 24 hours. GO BLUE!

My deferred daughter just got into LSA!!

Hail!!!

Congrats to your daughters! PiperMI-what school did your daughter apply to? Did either one of you do submit anything additional to admissions? My D is deferred from engineering and grades just came out this week–so fingers crossed.

Just submitted first trimester grades, and followed with a short note to the admissions officer for her region, affirming that she wanted to attend.

Just got in!! Go Blue!

For people that heard back, did you also receive an email saying to look at WA? Also is it weird that I ever saw on my WA that I was deferred? I only got the email in December but nothing else
