A post was split to a new thread: U. Michigan Raises Over $4B in Largest-Ever Fundraising Campaign
University of Michigan reports another record enrollment, nearly 116K applicants
Here is my sonâs profile. Would love to get your take on his EA chances:
OOS (Utah)
GPA: 3.94 UW / 4.4 W
ACT: 34
ECs: Multi-year baseball captain (All-American honorable mention but not playing in college); National Honor Society; Humane Society volunteer; and others
On-track for IB diploma and bi-literacy seal (French)
Through Junior Year: 3 APs / 6 IBs / tons of Honors classes
Intended Major: Political Science
Heâs up there as far as what Michigan is looking for but the competition is tough. Write a good essay. They count.
Sorry to be brief but on a plane from Oregon back home to Chicago.
How many students get accepted from his school to Michigan?
I agree with @Knowsstuff but Iâd add that with ED now in the mix, EA will probably be an even tougher get, if I had to bet.
Everything is going to be harder. Lol. But if they can afford it, itâs an amazing university. If the student takes advantage, there are so many opportunities to be had.
Yes but itâs important to note that looking at their HS track record of getting kids in EA isnât necessarily going to be as predictive or helpful as it wouldâve been had ED not been introduced.
At at least one other school where EA and ED are both offered, the conventional wisdom is that âno oneâ gets in EA. Hyperbole obviously, but worth noting to anyone applying to UMich this year.
Do you think a top student has a chance of getting into UofM with only two years of a foreign language? They took a lot of APs and have good leadership. Good test scores too. Just wanted to take other classes and not a foreign language. In-state if that matters.
You have to look at the cds for Michigan.
Common Data Set â Office of Budget and Planning https://share.google/RNA1ZOt6JuTLZl1aU
Go to section C5. The required is 2 yearâs for lsa BUT the recommended is 4 years. My son took 3 yearâs since he also wanted to take a business course his senior year.
The game is to have over the required amount really for any school youâre applying to.
Itâs also not about taking âa lot âof Aps. Itâs about taking the âcorrect âAps. Rigor is real for Michigan to evaluate.
If you want to share the stats /scores that would be helpful.
Thanks for posting these updates! Had a question for out of state (OOS) students; if theyâre not ready to apply ED, should they still submit EA to show their strong interest? Is there any admit rate advantage for EA vs. RD for OOS?
Always apply EA. Unless youâre really working on grades or scores but honestly still donât see a large disadvantage. With ED this year everything will be harder. But not impossible.
Main advantage is you might have 2 shots at admission and then 1.
All good points! I was trying to find more specific data from their CDS, but could not find the OOS admit numbers broken down by EA vs. RD for the last admission cycle. Is this data available somewhere (maybe I missed it)? Thanks!
To my knowledge they do not break this out in the CDS, but it certainly stands to reason. Which is not to say that kids donât get admitted who âonlyâ apply RD. But, assuming your application is ready thereâs no reason not to apply EA. I think itâs safe to say it wonât hurt and may help.
Lol. I agree with what is just posted. There really isnât any numbers but itâs sorta known EA might have an advantage. Yes, on their site it says no but it seems that higher stat students seem to get accepted EA and that seems like most schools out there.
Thanks! Our student wanted to retake SATs one more time, but maybe just submit now with what they have and then update admissions if scores improve (or update later if deferred)?
What is the score and what major?
Hi! My D(26) just applied ED to LSA at U-M.
We are In State.
Unweighted GPA: 3.946 (if I calculated it correctly), weighted 4.1108
Test scores: Not Submitted
ECâs: Supervising page editor for school paper, Editor in Chief of school yearbook, 2-year team captain of varsity tennis team that is #5 in the state in its division, Volunteer with National Ski Patrol, AP Scholar with distinction (6 AP classes with scores 3.5 or higher on all of them and taking 3 more senior year).
Sheâs a phenomenal student and hard worker, and is great at making connections with teachers and advisors. She puts in ALL the work. But she is not a natural when it comes to standardized tests, so her SAT and ACT scores are not reflective of her academic ability.
Will applying test-optional be detrimental to her chances of acceptance, or will admissions truly not take that into consideration?
Michigan is still figuring this all out. ButâŠ. They really do holistic reviews. My contention is⊠itâs hard to look away at a 34 ACT or 1520 Sat. Saying that.. Many students donât perform well on these tests but do well at Michigan. Those metrics they have information on.
I have talked to admissions and they donât even have a number of ED students they will take. Itâs all new to them as well.
Good luck. Itâs a great school if itâs in your budget. My son flourished there.
What is the SAT score? As long as itâs âgood enoughâ I would apply now with the current score and they can always update it later if a better score is achieved.
