University of Washington Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

Ohh no.. that kind of also explains why so many strong applicants end up getting rejected in-state, despite a decent overall acceptance rate. They pretty much admit all low-demand majors and that offsets a much lower acceptance rates for high-demand majors (not even counting Foster, Comp Sci etc.)
It’s an extremely silly loophole that UW should have plugged already.
I should have researched better than just assuming UW admits every non-direct major equally in one pool as a pre-major.

Since UW admissions site does not clarify this point of admit by majors (non direct), I asked this question to ChatGPT (I know we need to take this with a pinch of salt), but I don’t have any other source to quote right now.

This stuff honestly gets confusing (and I think admission departments prefer it that way), but after going through it for a few years - I have a couple kids there now - I’m certain intended major is considered. The other big piece is first-gen college students. If you look at the numbers UW allocates about 1/3 of it’s in-state spots for first gen.

Makes me regret that I should have moved to Texas or Georgia :worried:.

People are talking about select non-competitive majors in order to just get in. But my understanding is if you cannot get into the direct admit major you applied for, but you have decent grade, they will still admit you as Pre-science (or other Pre) correct?

For the in-state kids who do get in early (due to presidential scholorship or other ) do those just get updated in the portal? or by mail? I remember UW visiting some high schools to give out the awards but it seems like some also just got early notification.

It’s just a small handful, and to discuss in detail here may add confusion for the vast majority of applicants. But yes, it sounds like there’s a separate communication process.

The other ~75,000 applicants will likely all hear the same evening. (the recent decision timing is outlined above for anyone just joining)

Who else is waiting for UW Seattle decision before making their final deposit?
At this point I just wish to go under anesthesia and wake up an hour before decision notification.

We’ve heard from 2 out of 11 schools. Still a long way to go here!

Just got this email from admissions, not very helpful though.. lol

We know you’re eager to learn your student’s University of Washington admission decision. We’re busy reviewing applications, and we are on track to release decisions during the freshman admission notification period, March 1–15.

But the heading says “It’s almost time.” It also tells you to make sure your Net ID is working. When my D25 checked, her Net ID works, but when she presses “check application status”, it gives her an error. Maybe they are uploading decisions now??

I guess they mean “It’s almost time” within the context of the overall application timeframe of 4+ months.
I’d speculate decision around late next week, but would certainly welcome them sooner .

It’s almost always evening the second Thursday of the week and almost always crashes and reddit will serve you up a back door link to check your status that evening - it can take until the next AM to get into the admission portal.

I don’t understand how this would help UW. If you at UW do not get into a direct admit major you have to apply through standard admit. Foster and Econ have anywhere from a 25-50% standard admit acceptance rate - if you don’t get in you end up in that noncompetitive major anyway. What is the upside for UW? Filling French class? True you can get into any French class you want today at soph registration and probably can’t get into a Comm or Physics or Stats class at all. So you eventually funnel there anyway do you not?

I do not see discussed the fact UW statistically appears to be limiting admits from local-ish high schools. The last two year class profiles are incredibly uniform no matter the high school perceived quality or size - maxing out around 70 per school. That has to be intentional modeling.

I don’t know how to edit the post - I guess I’m not sure it’s almost always second Thursday but last year for some reason we KNEW it was coming that second Thursday at 8pm whether historical or some other tip off.

Very similar to the message sent out in prior years. Thurs March 6th or 13th just after 8pm still looking likely.

This is from the UW admissions website. Not sure why they say that the decisions will be released in batches between Mar 1-15, even though they they historically released them on a single day.

I think universities understand it’s not a great look if too many of their students don’t get into their preferred major. Leading to (even) more disgruntled parents/students, increased transfer activity, etc. This is a broader challenge for many competitive universities I suspect, and not just UW specific.

They’ve always worded it this way. And if it’s like the prior years one of those batches will have about 75,000 decisions in it. Nothing looking inconsistent at this point.

I have heard the more often you refresh your portal the more likely you are to get in though!
