Unmask Yourself!

The Costco masks from post #252 are with ear loops. Based upon my knowledge of the company, it is highly unlikely that Costco is intentionally selling fakes. So, those would only be fakes if they were duped. @Nrdsb4, do you think that they were duped?

We are being really careful. So, we try never to go anywhere public. We have people over to socialize in our yard. We take masks off when our guests are seated. We also have a pool and we stay socially distanced if a friend comes to swim. ShawWife has some workers helping her move her studio – they wear masks all day. I have worn masks when HVAC folks have come to the house. The only four times I have been in stores since early March are twice to pick up a prescription for my wife at CVS and twice at a local farmstand. In all cases, I have work masks. Hand sanitizer or washing before and after.

We do a fair bit of cycling. We wear a neck scarf-y thing and pull it up if we have to stop near people. There is a new bike path that we have tried a few times and all of the walkers, runners and cyclists are wearing some kind of mask. This seems weird to me as what I’ve read is that people running or cycling past you are not near you for sufficient duration to infect you, but maybe that is not longer the received wisdom.

I know absolutely nothing about Costco, so I couldn’t possibly speculate on their actions or motivations.

LOL. I’m a big COSTCO fan, but they get sued and/or busted regularly for fake goods. I see them all he time in my legal reporters. I’m not saying it is necessarily deliberate (well, maybe the Tiffany rings…), but the retailer is responsible for its supply chain.

We “wear” masks when riding our bikes, but we only pull them up when we are headed into a crowd/close to others for more than just passing.
We were riding last weekend and were well behind a group of about 15-20 riders in a cluster (they weren’t masked), and a person came up behind us and started cussing at us for being “stupid” (we were trying to figure out if we could quickly get around the group or should find another way to go - we went a different way).
When we were going through another “crowded area” but not within probably 15-20 feet from anyone else, someone was yelling at us/other bikers saying “what’s the matter with you, don’t you know we’re in the middle of a pandemic!”
We had carefully checked the rules, which said you don’t need to be masked when you pass people quickly.

@Knowsstuff --pm’ing.

So had a home Healthcare worker come with a frail 76 year old man today. Both are wearing masks. But she keeps hers under her nose. Agh. I talked to her about it especially with the age and co-morbidities of this patient. Like at least keep the masks up when coming to a doctors office…

Note that Costco is very careful with the description of those masks; it is the reviewers who say the masks are KN59. Costco is pretty good at scooping up “grey goods” and selling them in the US. “Grey goods” are authentic, genuine things produced for a market other than the market where a retailer sells them. I agree with @MomofWildChild - Costco is a regular name in trademark and copyright law books. They win some (Omega watches) and lose some (Tiffany rings), and settle some. It is a regular business game.

@Knowsstuff, how receptive was she to your advice?

I have been to the hair salon twice since re-opening. Everyone is masked, but the shampoo lady wears her mask beneath her nose. Do I want someone standing over me without being completely covered? No, I don’t need her respiratory droplets falling down on my face, regardless of being masked myself. For my haircut, I arrived with wet hair to avoid the shampooing and left without the blow dry. For my color, I had him put it on, paid him, left immediately, and shampooed when I got home.

H, D and I have all been wearing a mask since early on. I work in Open Heart Surgery so mask wearing is no big deal to me plus H is high risk. I wear an N95 with a level 3 mask over it and a face shield for intubating/extubating. When in the break room, I wear a regular ear-looped mask that the hospital has for when we’re not in the OR and keep the loop around one ear while I eat/drink and back on when I’m done. I do worry about transmission in the break room so I try to limit my time in there.

D works in a grocery store and, well before the store mandated it, we told her she had to wear a mask and her glasses (no contacts) to work. It’s been mandated now locally for awhile and statewide (IN) order happened July 27th. I so appreciate the customers who don’t buck the system bc my kid is in contact with many people depending on how long her shift lasts. I also wear a mask when going through a fast-food drive thru or when the employee comes near the car to take my order (Chik-fil-A).

Have not had a haircut since well before March, will not go to the dentist for awhile (been flossing diligently, lol), no indoor restaurants, still clean my groceries and to-go containers, limit my grocery shopping trips and have D bring home quick things from store when needed and she’s working, no clothes shopping, etc. Just not willing to risk certain things right now.

Not looking forward to D’s XC season - don’t know how in the world they’re going to pull off race start with hundreds of kids and I’m not looking forward to school - D21 goes to a school with nearly 4,000 kids and she has no other option but F-2-F bc her classes are not offered virtually. Sigh!

Very actually. It is such a habit that she didn’t even realize it. Others do this also. I have to remind my help to remind them but once they get into the room they like relax and lower. Yes, cover the nose. It’s actually very important. Plus some masks just don’t fit well since they are pretty cheap. As stated, I got some awesome masks on Esty that come up over the nose and extremely well made and can put a filter in (not with a valve and btw she had no hesitation making and shipping me a new one. I sent her some articles and she didn’t realize the change…things changing so fast}/

I am thinking of switching from my long time colorist due to behavior in his salon. He has been with the salon where I also get my haircut, for 16 years. That salon has been doing everything right, and the owner, who also cuts my hair, has been wonderful. He has limited the stylist and well as client in the salon at one time, all the while doing more than is required by the CDC and other guidelines. Even when salons could open here, he didn’t open until he had everything in place. He has been fabulous to his stylist, applying for unemployment for each of them, as well as making sure they were able to keep their job.

During SIP, my colorist decided to move to another salon. All sound great, so I followed. The first time I went, it was early in the morning and he was the only one there, wearing a mask. The time before last, another stylist was there; neither she or her client wore a mask. Even though I was not near them, I was not comfortable. The next appointment came and I texted and said I needed to know if that stylist would be there as I couldn’t come if she was. He said now that the city required mask, it would not be a problem. Well she was wearing a mask, but both she and her client took them on and off, and I have noticed the IG picture of the after hair pictures all have the client without mask. The original salon still has everyone in their pics with their mask on. So while I love my colorist, I think I am going to switch to someone where I get my haircut.

I know this isn’t related to masks but hair (and nail) salons will be closing tonight…our numbers have gone up. Ours was the only county in the area that had them open (numbers were OK) but, no surprise that we’re going to have to close again, I had an appointment for a cut and color on Wednesday and I can tell my salon has been taking this very seriously. Feel so badly for them and, well, a little bit for me too, lol but, in the scheme of things, I know I have it pretty darn good.

I have read of two incidents recently of airplanes having to return to the airport or gate because of passengers refusing to wear masks.

It’s so frustrating to me that mask wearing has been politicized.

What did fellow passengers do? Boy, I bet they were loved!

We seldom go out, except for necessities. I had to go to Lowe’s yesterday in a rural town in NC and there was 90 to 95 percent of the patrons wearing masks. Those that were not, did not seem to be bothering anyone nor did anyone say anything to anyone re mask wearing compliance, everyone just went about their business.

I have read many folks saying lots of shoppers in southern states did not comply and perhaps that is true, but not yesterday where I was shopping…

If you want to see something scary, do a search of “Stand Up Maine” on Facebook. You will see posts like this: “I have a couple of days off and would love to go visit somewhere in our state where I could freely move about, go and buy some dinner, maybe stay at a B & B, and not be harassed for not wearing a mask. Is this possible anywhere within a couple of hours of southern Maine? I’m so tired of being verbally harassed and walking among masked zombies and would like a little vacation from it. Anyone?”

Good grief.

I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone in a store without a mask. I’ve had to visit a fair number of stores this weekend and mask wearing is at 100% here in central MA.

^^^^Wow. How discouraging. : (

@silpat, you and your husband showed great restraint. I wouldn’t, or could have done the same.
