I wear a mask indoors, and outdoors if social distancing might be a problem or if I am going in and out of multiple places, I will leave it on until I am finished with my indoor activities. My mask situation has evolved. Before they were mandated, we were under stay at home orders, so I wasn’t going much of anywhere, but when I’d go out, I’d wear a neck gaiter and would raise it if the people I encountered were masked. If they weren’t masked, I kept it around my neck. Once mandated in May, I “bit the bullet” and bought a few reusable masks.
Yup, every time I leave the house. I have health conditions and so do some family members. I live alone so don’t have the fear of spreading in my household that others might have.
My town is kind of crowded with tourists from all over right now. I still wear a mask on walks downtown because it is hard to distance.
If I go to the grocery store, I wear a cloth mask with surgical mask over it and sunglasses. I sanitize before getting back in the car. Still sanitize groceries but reconsidering. I shower and do laundry including mask once inside.
I have a variety of mask types and vary what I do. For instance, for a walk, I might wear a lighter mask. If I am going to see people (which I have done 4 times now, outdoors and distanced) I put a filter inside my mask. If I go to the grocery or drug store or PO< I double mask and/or use a filter.
I bought goggles and face shields at one point. If I have to go to the doctor or ER I might consider face shield. Ditto visiting my mother in a facility, which will be allowed this week in MA.
The next question is, If you’re wearing a mask, do you have it over your nose and mouth, or only over your mouth? I’m amazed at the number of people at my gym who don’t put it over their nose. They’re all generally young.
There is zero point in wearing a mask if it isn’t covering both your nose and mouth.
Of course, over the nose. Everyone I see with a mask has theirs over the nose m most of the time,. Once in. a while, they pull it down a bit exposing the nose but in general they are covering both.
Suburb of NYC here, next door to initial epicenter. Have worn a mask when out of the house since the middle of March. When walking in the neighborhood where I’m unlikely to run into anyone (can cross to the other side of the street if I see anyone coming), I carry it just in case. Just yesterday I went hiking with my H and D and the park required masks which we all wore except when deep in the woods on the trail and no one was around. Even then I pulled it down so I could easily pull it up if anyone approached. On the narrow parts of the trails where others were appearing pretty frequently we all wore our masks correctly over the nose and mouth.
For now we’re all wearing disposable surgical-type masks since the cotton ones are much more uncomfortable in the summer heat. I managed to get a couple of boxes very early on and they are now available in many places.
I see high mask compliance pretty much everywhere here and in NYC where my kids live.
We all mask up. I have only eaten at one restaurant since things opened up, and that was outdoors. We had to mask to be seated, and wore masks to order and to exit. I don’t wear a mask when exercising, but I’m nowhere near people. Obviously, I can’t wear a mask in the pool, but they are required to walk to and from the entrance.
And yes, I get super judgy about people who refuse to wear them shopping. If every single person in every single state had warn a mask every single time, we’d be done with this pandemic. It’s such an easy solution. Now I fear we are headed for more lockdowns and the economic devastation that will ensue.
I wear a mask any time I’m out in a public setting and anytime I’m riding in a car with someone. I had a few (like 3) disposable surgical masks I’d used when doing glasswork so I wore those at first, then made several cloth masks for myself and for friends. (Olsen and pleated) I used those now because I can wash them after wearing out in public. I also have PM2.5 filter inserts for my home-made masks.
Mask compliance in town is pretty high, but mask use has been mandated both by the city and state since early on during the pandemic. In the city–no masks and customers are asked to leave the store. No masks = no service. Outside of the ABQ-Santa Fe area, mask use is pretty spotty. A number of county sheriffs have publicly stated they are refusing to enforce the state mandate on masks and refuse to require their officers to wear masks.
I wear it correctly, but I would say about 1/3 or more of the people I see in stores, supermarkets & restaurants don’t–including the store employees. It particularly bothers me at restaurants. When I pick up my to-go order if the workers aren’t wearing their mask properly that’s the last time order from that particular restaurant. But the most egregious violators have been at Lowes. I had some irrigation system issues in March/April. I’d order the repair parts online for pick up in hope of getting in and out fast. But the 4 times I went to pick up my orders, the employees at Customer Service were wearing their masks around their neck (not on their faces at all) or had them pulled down below their noses, They also routinely pulled their masks down to talk to other employees and customers. Between the improper masking, lack of hand sanitizer use by employees, and the slow, long lines at Customer Service, it probably would have been faster and safer if I had just gone in, gotten the parts I needed, paid and left.
I wear a mask anytime I’m inside. Outside I avoid as much as possible any place it would be necessary. No interest in going places with narrow paths. Instead I walk on my very wide open suburban subdivision. The closest I get to anyone is 10 ft. Most often it’s 100 ft or more. It’s easy to cross the street or veer onto wide grassy area in the few instances where I’m even coming close to that 10 ft distance. I Do put on my mask after I leave my car when I’m about to enter a grocery or other place. And I wear it before and after I’m seated at outdoor restaurant and when ordering.
Here is suburban N Chicago everyone seems to wear masks indoors. A few I’ve seen wear it outdoors even though they are very very far from others. At some point masks can cause skin irritation with repeated so I would never wear one when not necessary.
Live in Chicago. Indoors yes. You have to plus why wouldn’t you?
I work in the western suburbs and same there. When outside walking my dog or talking a stroll then no. But I have one in my pocket incase I need it. Everyone avoids each other. Neighbors social distance. Many younger people do wear masks just walking around which surprises me. Everyone is respectful.
Drive thru’s, yes. I didn’t always but thought If I have to reach in to get my food /drink then that’s close enough. Mask up!
I have been wearing a mask since the lockdown in March. I do occasionally jog outside but I can easily socially distance myself so I don’t wear one when on a trail. I am in So Cal in Orange County. Yesterday I went to Fashion Island in Newport Beach to really just walk outside (With a mask). I would say maybe 75% were wearing masks in the outdoor part of the mall. In the stores, most everyone was wearing masks but I did see some with none which was upsetting to me as the Gov. mandated it. In next door Irvine at another mall, compliance was much higher- maybe 95%. They had store employees at the entrance of every store and only allowing shoppers with masks inside the store.
Indoors in commercial buildings - always. Outdoors in lines, it depends. More and more, yes, because people don’t seem to understand what 6’ looks like.
In my public building, I wear one everywhere except in my work station and a couple of meetings where I had to talk extensively where we were all at least 10 feet apart. I don’t like it, but people seem to have trouble understanding me talking with a mask on. (And hardly anyone to no one else is wearing one either) Anyone else have this problem?
Outdoors walking/running, no. Easy to stay away from people.
I find myself growing more angry at the non compliers by the day. Our compliance is probably around 50% on average. I’ve heard all the reasons stated before. And in my building it’s even less. I don’t think I’ve seen any employee with one in the bathroom. Entering/leaving the building is a bit better, but usage is very low in the hallways during business hours. I now stay 15 min late each day hoping some of the air will clear a little when I leave.
Husband and I both wear mask when inside anywhere other than our own home. We are both in healthcare, so wearing mask 9 hours a day. At work I drop mine down to drink my water, but turn toward the wall, away from others.
We also always wear them for curbside pickup or drive thru at the bank and pharmacy. Hand sanitizer is kept in both cars, so once we enter the car from work or errands, we sanitize before removing our mask. We have had dinner twice at a local burger place, where you order at the counter, and eat outside. Mask stay on until food is ready, or when we go inside to refill our drinks and when we leave. Even a quick food drop off to my mother’s I wear a mask.I have several in my car and what I wear for work is not what I wear for an errand. I am afraid they will not survive multiple washings, so I let one percolate in the car and re-wear later in the week, before washing over the weekend.
Tomorrow I go to the eye doctor, so will double mask (a cloth mask over a surgical) as he will be real close to my face! I will change to a different mask when I get to work.
It is funny, there are times I have left it on while driving, forgetting to take it off. Reminds me of listening to kids music when the kids were little, and forgetting to change the station, or cassette once they had been dropped off at school! There were many times I was signing along to Raffi with no children in the car; no on purpose
Yes, mask at any public place inside.
Not while exercising though often have a buff I could makeshift if needed
Yes, in outside places where others might be “close” - like the local ice cream place where people line up outside even though SD.
Yes at work - from parking lot until my office - health care setting and is required. One is always around my neck even while in my office. It goes on if I am out on the department floor.
Always over mouth and nose. I don’t love the way it feels - who does? But I do it.
I have a couple in my purse and several (disposable) in my car. And in the summer the headbands I wear can dual as a mask.
I continue to limit public places largely except for grocery type stores. No clothing stores. No restaurants. No interest! (except occasional take out) I would estimate mask wearing in these places at 65% mask wearing, 35% not. Depends on the store.
Always. And mask shaming isn’t a thing. Let’s not give those who refuse to wear masks any reason to believe their refusal to mss mask up is justifiable.
Every time I post about this on Facebook, somebody responds, “Some people can’t wear them! Don’t judge!” That’s an exact quote.
My response: “If you have such severe breathing issues that you can’t wear a mask, you should not be out in public, period, because you’re at high risk if you catch the virus.”
If the purpose of this thread is just to be able to tell about yourself wearing a mask then you all are doing a great job! No one is going to comment on it that they aren’t wearing a mask.
Illinois requires masks indoors (and outdoors if SD is not possible. I see excellent compliance in my area.
I started wearing a mask back in March, back when they were saying you only needed one if you were sick. Got a lot of funny looks at first (at the time I liked how it kept people away from me), but soon it was mandatory.
I do wear a mask when a delivery is being made to my car or I am doing a drive-through. Otherwise, I tend not to wear them outside, in my car, or in my own office at work. At the ice rink, we wear them while putting on and taking off our skates, but the entire class pockets them while on the ice. SD-ing comes naturally to us when we are actually on the ice.
I am pretty close to living my pre-covid schedule in many ways. I am just doing it with the mask and SD. While I can only tolerate the mask for 30-45 minutes at a time, that’s plenty to get me in and out of a store. A short mask break really goes a long way for me too. A couple minutes mask-free in the car and a fresh mask, and I find that I am good to go again. I suspect many of the people who say they can wear masks all day are doing so with the help of frequent short breaks.
@Nrdsb4 do you take a lot of short breaks while wearing a mask all day?
and to add to this question, … or do you keep it hanging at your neck? Many people in my community consider themselves to be complying with local ordinance if they wear a mask around the neck!
