‘He Saved Our Lives’: Former Hostages Recall Carter’s Quest to Free Them
The Iran hostage crisis became a symbol of a failed presidency, but for some of those who lived it, Jimmy Carter was the one who brought them home at the expense of his political career.

Is the service today - or lying in state?

Last night I just got a notification that Jan 9th is a national holiday for the US and we have the day off. It is going to mess up our work schedule and the markets will be closed.

It’s the cortege to the Carter Center where he’ll lie in repose until the 7th. Then he’ll be transported to the US Capitol to lie in state until the 9th.

It’s a federal holiday, not a national holiday. But yes, the stock market will be closed

It will be interesting to see if some states follow the federal government on this.

My husband and I went to Plains and the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park last March. It’s very nicely done. We learned a lot. The boyhood farm was such a beautiful peaceful place. Talking to a ranger she told us not to slow down in front of the house where Carter was living because the Secret Service in the guard building out front didn’t like it. She also said that once Carter passed that house would be eventually opened to the public also. I met Carter at a book signing in Nashville c1989. I’m about to try to track down that book.

I read it too fast. It is a “National day of mourning.” My business unit observes Federal holidays.

A post was merged into an existing topic: Update: President carter passes away (was: President Jimmy Carter to begin receiving hospice care)

Where’s Michelle Obama?

Reportedly, Michelle Obama is still in Hawaii.

Shocked she isn’t there – but had Michelle Obama attended, she would have been seated next to Trump.

I have been following most of the coverage this week, both local and national. I can only imagine the emotions and toll on the entire Carter family with the travel and services for President Carter, especially after his long Hospice care. While it might not been known to others, a family member was with Carter at all times; usually his children, but I believe also the grandsons at times.

No matter the age, as a family member, having one service is hard enough to go through, yet the Carter family has had to be on public display many times, in 3 different cities. The travel and cold alone would do me in.

On a separate note, those poor flag holders outside. I don’t know how heavy the flags and poles are, but they were struggling in the wind. One had his knees bent to brace himself against the wind.

It was a beautiful service. Trump and Obama sure were chatty!

I need to look at a video to see who sat by whom. I am curious. Interesting about Trump and Obama being chatty.

I thought the eulogies by his grandson, Jason Carter, and Gerald Ford’s son, Steven, were great.

IMO it is good to see that they are capable of polite chit-chat despite personal and political differences.
