Upgrading from iPhone 3G to 4 - Worth it? Reception Issues?

pizzagirl and jrpar – where did you get the notice about the upgrade offer? Was it part of your bill or something on the AT&T website? I have a 3GS and don’t remember seeing an offer like that. But I think I’ll wait on the 5, too…

Generally speaking, Apple drops the price of the current top end model to make it the low end model when they introduce a new phone. That is - the 4G is the current high end - usually $199 with a contract. The 3GS - the old high end model - is now the low end - usually something like $59.

AT&T offering the 4G for $18 bucks says to me that the new one (the “5G” or “4GS”) will be out shortly - and that the 4G will be the new low end.

I’m waiting…

It was part of my bill. I pay for 3 phones on this account, my kids’ and another family member’s. I called and they confirmed could upgrade for $18 (plus of course the 2 year contract). But there’s no harm in waiting, right? They said the upgrade doesn’t expire. BTW their phones are 3GS, not 3G, my mistake.

You do realize you wont get the newest model for the upgrade price of $18, right? Only the model they are discontinuing is offered at those low rates. The new model will probably start at $199, as always.

patsmom, I received a letter in the mail. It looked like junk mail but for some reason I opened it.

Rumor now is that Best Buy will be putting the iPhone 3GS phone on sale soon - price $0

I have a 32gb iPhone and was thinking about same size for d but considering that she lets others hook it up to their sound systems to play her music files ( on her iPod) ,& one was stolen , one damaged I’m rethinking that plan.

My 3G iPhone seems to be dying, so I asked my Apple guru for advice. She told me the 5 vs. 4 improvement will be more significant than the 4 vs. 3 was, and that the 5 will probably be out in October. I predict that when the 5 comes out the 4 will be nearly free and the 5 will be $199 or $299.

The timeline is always unknown until the actual release date, but an $18 promotion is a pretty good indication that the new model isn’t far off.

My 3G is also limping along; I am hoping the 5 release is soon before the 3G actually bite the dust! I have quit looking at the rumored release date as it just keeps changing. The last I heard the preorder dates was going to be Rosh Hashanah and the actual release date was Yom Kippur; I guess no one at Apple is Jewish ;)
