To those who fervently oppose AA:

Just out of curiousity, do you all find yourselves upset whenever you see or hear of a URM at a top school, in a successful career/job, etc.?

It wasn’t a brief search. Im a pretty good searcher and I honestly couldn’t find them. I don’t think theyre wrong because they’re coming from you – i just don’t trust statistics unless ive seen the study myself. You’ve heard the expression…

And I’m only a worthy adversary because I’ve got my ass kicked a bunch of times arguing with people like you! =p

oakey: not at all. I actually get pleasure from it.

I find it interesting that Hu immediately assumed we didn’t know what racism was or that racism existed when we stated we were against AA. I find it more interesting that I’ve experienced racism firsthand because of MY color of skin. I am not black, but I am yellow and I experience a lot of racism due to the color of my skin and also due to the fact that I’m Japanese. I have been called “jap” many many times before, in classrooms and outside of classrooms. There are many American families who distrust Japanese because of WWII and are against any of us thinking for ourselves. Their ideas are passed down to their children and affect me directly. But do I want to be accepted into a university just because of the color of my skin? No, that’s very insulting. I want universities where I go to be filled with people who are qualified, and only by people who are qualified. If that means universities will become entirely white or entirely Chinese, that’s okay. I’m there to receive the best education possible. So please, don’t automatically assume that we don’t know what racism is just because we’re against AA.

*I’m fully aware that many people are going to argue against me because I’m an Asian, an overrepresented minority. But that doesn’t change teh fact that I do understand what being discriminated feels like. And technically, Japanese is an URM. Anyway, whether it means be given better chances or worse chances, being treated differently because of the color of your skin is wrong.
