US citizen in Italy aiming for NYU, Fordham, and USC [8.2/10 GPA, <$30k]

Yes, I was aware thank you! Since I was interested in their marketing major I would be located at the Gabelli Business School on the Rose Hill Campus.

You may have to go to another country in Europe. I saw the test offered in Belgium, UK, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, but it wasn’t possible for my daughter to go alone, so
I sent her to the States where my sister could drive her and she visited the school she now attends, at the same time. France was difficult, as most private schools won’t let you use their test centers, which I found very elitist. Most people ended up having to take the test in Rennes. There may be other options in the south of France closer to Italy.

I have a question regarding the courses section on CommonApp. When I go to type in the subject it gives me options like biology, chemistry, and earth science but within my science course we study all of these; what do I put? The science (others) option?
In addition, what do I put as course level? I am still confused about which of my classes are honors/AP.

Typically you had the equivalent of 1 year in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, CS or Environmental Science (I forgot which but you’d know) - the courses are divided differently from the way they are in the US but you cover 1 unit’s worth of material per each science subject! Then, if you are in liceo scientifico, mark IB HL for 3 as well as Math (or 4 and Math AA SL.)
Philosophy, Literature, History
can be marked as Honors or AP.
They will know from your transcript and school profile that it’s an imperfect equivalent and will know how to convert this – the IB designation is just a short hand on your (student) side (your actual transcript and GC rec will be used).

Hello, I am in a very similar situation to OP (same year, live in Italy and US citizen) but I will be applying to different colleges and different majors from him/her. How did you calculate the GPA? I have looked for some sort of conversion and I’ve seen very different ideas on the values.

I am also planning to take the SAT.

Hi! I also struggled with gpa conversion but I contacted the admissions team at NYU and they sent me this link.

However, selecting Italy as the country and secondary school as the grade level, this is what shows up and what I based the conversion of my grades on.

Thank you very much! That is very useful. Good luck for getting into NYU and your other desired schools.

Th scale would benefit from some nuance in the 7-8.9 range :joy:
Basically, 40% students get an A or A-, and the next 40% are divided into B+, B, and B-.
3.75+ is an expected minimum for highly selective universities, 3.5-3.6 for selective but not highly selective flagships, 2.8-3.2 for a regional college.
Adjust based on these “marking bands” if you prefer.

But if I get an 8/10 average at the end of the year would it still be considered a 4.0 GPA for universities?

Hello, I’m sorry to bother but I just wanted to ask one more question. You said universities assess my education based on where I went to high school, does that include extracurriculars as well?

Yes, 8=4.0 but it has to be cumulative. So if you have 8, 7.8, 8.2,8.2 its a 4.0. But if you have 7.5, 7, 7, 8.2
it doesn’t add up to a 4.0 (more like 3.75).
You’ll be evaluated in your context: were you able to do the absolute best they saw from Italy? From Western Europe? They won’t compare you to kids in the US nor to kids in the UAE or Hong Kong.

Ok, thank you. I’ve been focused in particular on my extracurriculars because they are quite weak (consisting mainly of volunteering) compared to other international and domestic students I’ve seen on these forums.

Keep the focus on what you HAVE accomplished.

The grading system in Italy is really strict, solely based on tests (both written and oral, almost never multiple choice but open questions on anything). In a liceo, especially scientifico and classico , I would say every subject is at least honors , more often AP level and they have 9/10 subjects every year
this is how Fulbright explains the grading system in Italy
