There are only 125 Med schools so being in the Top 50 is good but hardly superduper. Many below the Top 50 are pretty limited.

Well, no, there are also about 20-30 or so OD schools, which also produce practicing doctors. I think it’s safe to say that the UC Med-schools are probably better than almost all of them. So, really, there are about 150 schools in question. To be in the top 50 is to be in the top 1/3, which is pretty darn decent.

Totally agree. Very well argued.

In the end, it’s hard to argue with the general thinking that acceptance rates matter (regardless of whether one is discussing undergrad or grad programs). They an important component / tool / metric (not the only one mind you - but an important one nonetheless) that one can readily utilize in an effort to assess / compare / rank respective programs.

what are you doing spending all this time on CC. shouldnt you be off making money or something.

Ok, I’m going to dumb down the arguement and just ask a question, why is Rutgers ranked in the 60’s? I know some of their Research and even their Pharmacy is top notched, but I guess I’m just complaining because I’m from NJ and so many people I know that don’t really try in school get in and brag about its so great and calling it a public Ivy League even though the term doesn’t exist. One kid I know even got his GED instead of finishing high school, he’s doing two years in cc and then he plans to transfer to Rutgers, along the way praising himself on how it made his life so much easier.

% accepted can be an important component some of the times, but in most cases, it is not very telling.

Thanks for your concern. I’ve already made plenty of money.

Further, what am I “doing here”?

What is anyone doing here? Asking questions, answering questions, expressing opinions, providing perspectives, discussing, arguing, debating, etc.

Not that it’s any of your business, but I first stumbled upon CC while trying to keep up to date on latest college news for my son and nephews.

Lastly, you appear to be from England attending an English university - I could very well ask what YOU are doing here on an American college board site? (shouldn’t you be off studying the decline of the British Empire or something?)

Seems to me as a graduate of two distinguished American universities, I have every right to be here posting my advice, opinions, perspective - which beg the questions - what exactly do you offer? What exactly has your value add been? and while you ponder those questions, ask yourself why you felt compelled to single me out - could it possibly be another knee-jerk reaction to my handle? Quite shallow if you ask me and not very impressive Oxford.

Seriously, people like myself, Ivy_Grad, and Alexandre are the best things this site offers - people who are actually out there doing things and who have real experience.

hahaha these things are so rediculous…but I think that something like this would show a lot more progress for 2007:

Of course everything is give or take a spot or two…but honestly, there are some schools that are simply under/overrated.

Underrated Schools: Stanford, Rice, UCB, Georgetown, UMich, Tufts, Rochester

Overrated Schools: Harvard, Penn, Duke, Wash U, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Wake

…and let the useless banter begin! haha this is just for fun people so don’t take anything too seriously…I guess this is just what I personally believe to be a better representation…

Enjoy!

I think most users of this site will absolutely agree that posters with “real world” experience (who have been there and done that) have been an incredibly valuable resource.

Not only do they add a certain depth to the conversations and discussions, frankly, this site owes the “real world” guys like Alexandre an incredible debt for his insight, time, ability to contribute a wealth of knowledge in a heartbeat and devotion to helping others.

For me, although I’ve not always agreed with everyone, I’ve definitely enjoyed reading and discussing with the other “real world” posters (Alexandre, Slipper, Sakky, etc.) and I believe that most posters here would say the same.

hey just wondering where the heck UW is?!

Which one?

when is the 2007 list coming out? i know grad schools ranking is already out, but i’m not sure about the colleges ranking…

Reflecting of how strong student bodies are and of past rankings:

I think that US News should keep these general top 10 and mix them up so people will read from year to year

1-5 HYPSM
6-10 Columbia, Cal Tech, Duke, Dartmouth, Penn

I didn’t think the proposed list was that far off, although haven’t been monitoring how USN&WR may have changed weightings. It’s very hard to compare Dartmouth to MIT or CalTech and say which is “better” because they are such different schools, just like at a somewhat lower level it’s very hard to compare RPI to BC too. In general, I think the rankings always underestimate Georgetown, especially in relation to Notre Dame. It also seems that people on these boards tend to love Penn in comparison to Dartmouth, which I don’t understand. Maybe, I’m more old school and don’t appreciate Penn’s recent rise, for whatever reason, and tend to value more rural/suburban schools with a real sense of commuinity much more.

Private Schools:

Tier One –
Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Stanford
MIT/Caltech

Tier Two
Columbia/Dartmouth/UPenn/Duke
University of Chicago/Brown/Hopkins

Tier Three
Cornell/Northwestern/Wash U.
Vanderbilt/Notre Dame/Georgetown/Rice

Tier Four
Emory/Tufts/Wake Forest/CMU/NYU
Rochester/USC/Lehigh/Brandeis/BC

Forget those public schools!
