Us news rankings 2011

You argued against my claim that rankings are crap by using ANOTHER ranking?..What do they teach in ChemE ;)

Ranking are not crap. They aren’t THAT accurate though. Rankings should be a foundation, where you build up your list. They shouldn’t be the only thing you do though, on finding a right college.

Now, you have more toys to play until next week.

i hope USC passes UCLA.

Just to save everyone from counting, that is 27 schools. Yes, I know that means there are ties.

Hey xiggi, plz fix the MC to NC. Thanks

Done … :)

And, yes that means that no school was bumped from a coveted spot among the top 25.

does that mean that 25th must have a 3-way tie to b considered “top 25”?

Nope!

You could have

Imagine that … USC ranked 23d in the country and still not listed among CC top universities. The horror. The horror.

oh true. hahaha thanks

The above list has an error in it. The 15th and 16th slots need to be flipped.

The following is the correct top 25 USNWR ranking of National Universities for 2010:

1 Harvard University (MA)
1 Princeton University (NJ)

One of my CC observations has been that Californians are continually surprised that few people outside California really know anything about the UC’s beyond UCLA and Berkeley. It’s an incredibly state-centric mentality.

Brooklynborndad! Get out of the bubble that is TJ and come into the rest of the world! Where even in “nice” upper middle class suburbs, the GC’s serve simultaneously as college counselors and as social workers, they have a huge number of students that they can’t possibly get to know beyond a 15 minute conversation once a year, and where the bulk of their college-related time is spent either looking under rocks for scholarship money, or doing the paperwork related to the state and directional state u’s. These aren’t people who have traveled extensively or lived elsewhere. Honestly, they haven’t a clue beyond the vague generalities of “Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, those are good schools.”

final prediction given new information (and hawkettes analysis of CDS on another thread) and proposed changes to methodology:

1) Harvard -100
2) Yale - 99
3) Princeton - 98
4) MIT - 94
5) Stanford, Upenn - 93
7) Columbia - 92
8) Dartmouth, Caltech - 91
10) Duke - 90
11) NW, Brown - 88
13) Chicago, Cornell - 87
15) Wash U - 85
16) JHU - 84
17) Notre Dame 82
18) Rice - 81
19) Georgetown, Vanderbilt - 78
21) Emory - 77
22) UVA - 75
23) UC -Berkeley, USC - 74
25) Wake, UCLA, CMU - 72
28) UNC - 71
29) Tufts, Michigan - 69

As hard as it may be for you to believe, the majority of students in this country aren’t interested in going overseas, or more specifically, going overseas to those countries where it’s all about familiarity-masquerading-as-prestige and if-I-haven’t-heard-of-it-I-conclude-that-it’s-no-good as opposed to the more intelligent if-I-haven’t-heard-of-it-maybe-I-might-learn-something-new. Given that, why should it be important from a USNWR standpoint? Let all those countries run their “what US schools impress us the very mostest” polls, but what should that have to do with USNWR?

what do you guys think 30-35 is going to look like?

prediction:

biggest climbs (in average rank):
+4.5 Brown
+3.5 Georgetown
+3 wake, Notre Dame
+2.5 USC, UVA, Dartmouth

biggest falls:
-2.5 WashU, Michigan, UC - Berkeley
-3 Caltech, Emory
-4 CMU
-5 Chicago

^^i really like confidentialcoll’s list

USNews has released a list of the top 25 national universities. It is on their site. The placement within the top 25 will not be announced until August l7th.

There are some ties as 27 universities are on the list. It is exactly the same as last year with the addition of University of Southern California and Wake Forest to the top 25.

yeah, that’s old news given that there’s a thread called Wake and USC in the top 25. just because the top 25 doesn’t change much does not mean there can’t be significant changes within the top 25.
