I’m a Spring Admit! Now What?

Posted on April 3, 2013 by Meredith Schweitzer

The wait is finally over! You received the long-awaited thick envelope from USC with your admission decision inside and opened it excitedly to see you were admitted to the spring term. I’m sure many of you thought, “What exactly is a spring admit, anyway?” I recognize that this can be a bit of a surprise and quite possibly disappointing, which is exactly why I’m here to tell you that you are truly loved and accepted just as much at the students admitted to the fall term! Believe me when I say we were excited to admit you and are hoping you will join the Trojan Family.

Spring Admit and recent alumna Rachel Hirsch ’11 said it best:
“I think what’s most important to get across to Spring admit students is that this isn’t USC’s way of telling you they don’t want you now. They do. They accepted you and to even be considered as an applicant to this school is an accomplishment in it of itself. And to be admitted! Kids would kill for this position. I know it feels like a small form of rejection but it’s not. I wouldn’t have traded my spring admit status for anything. It allowed me to have a little more time after high school to realize all of the inevitable change that was ahead and it gave me some real life experience (as cliché as that sounds). You will have some of the best years of your life walking on campus and going to football games and creating a complete college experience for yourself.
If you want to go here, go – because it’s clear USC wants you.
And of course, Fight On!”

So, congratulations! Students who are admitted to the spring term make up an important part of the incoming freshman class. Although we’re not able to admit every student to the fall semester, we are able to admit some amazing students to the spring semester. We’ve found this approach to be extremely successful over the years, as many students relish the chance to do something different during the fall semester. Hopefully, I can provide some insight into what it means to be a spring admit and how to take advantage of your fall semester so you can hit the ground running once you start taking classes at USC.

If I’m admitted to the spring, what do I do during the fall semester?
As a spring admit, you have can utilize the fall semester in a variety of ways. Perhaps you will decide to take college courses, maybe traveling abroad is appealing, or it could be that you’re considering working or spending your time volunteering. Many spring admits gain college credits that will transfer to USC during this time so that they are able to graduate with their class. We recommend that students take classes at their local community college or as a non-degree seeking student at a local university. If you do decide to take college courses, be sure to consult with your admission counselor to review which courses transfer to USC.

But, what about going to football games during the fall?
Spring students are able to purchase football tickets after submitting the Enrollment Commitment Deposit online.

Can I still live in university housing?
In terms of living in university housing for the spring semester, it’s not a guarantee. However we are typically able to accommodate all first-year students who enter in the spring semester. If you’re interested in applying for university housing, the housing application will be available beginning July 1. We do not offer university housing for spring admits during the fall semester, however some spring admits have chosen to live near campus in privately owned apartments in the past.

Ok, this sounds like a pretty great option for me! How do I secure my spot as a USC spring admit?
It’s simple! Fill out the response card that came with your admission packet and send it back to us by May 1. You will be asked to submit the $300 Enrollment Commitment Deposit by August 1.

What else do I need to know?
If you have any other questions related to being a spring admitted student, contact our office or your admission counselor. Also, be sure to sign up to attend one of the Spring Preview events or the Admitted Student Reception during the month of April. This is a great opportunity to visit campus, ask questions, meet other spring admits, and also hear from current USC students who were spring admits.
