USC Class of 2022

@green26knight Ah, that’s too heady a question for me. I can tell you that my D got a Deans, University and a 3rd Dept. scholarship and all 3 have funded both years so far, fwiw. (She’s a 2nd semester soph.) But I don’t know how the NMF’s work. SC has been pretty good with getting info out so I’m sure they’ll let you know. Congrats! That’s quite an accomplishment.

I’m sure it will still be on his statement, since its not one of the following listed here:
https://ahf.usc.edu/merit-scholars/merit-scholarships/

@green26knight It does stuck. Since my DD put USC as her college of choice at the beginning of March, her FA portal already listed both University Scholarship and Presidential Scholarship - NMF. From what I heard, there will be another $1000 USC sponsored NMF scholarship coming later in summer. Congrats to your S.

@green26knight @netopspin @menloparkmom Thanks for this information! Had the same question. I’ll take whatever we can get!

@Nomorelurker I meant 750,000. I don’t know how he is going to pay it off and neither does he, but he borrowed 250,000 from my uncle (who is wealthy but would never finance anything else and expects his money back soon), 200,000 from a friend, and 300,000 from the bank some years back.

@CADREAMIN I did apply for FAFSA and CSS, but hadn’t completed two forms they had online in their database, which I submitted a few days ago so they should be processing now. I appreciate all the advice! I have all the documentation including the 2017 tax return with the correct income, proof of medical expenses, sending living expenses to relatives, etc, along with affirmation from the CPA, and my brother’s college tuition and the loans my father has taken. I hope I’m able to afford my education somehow. I’m doing my best to keep any burden from falling on them, so I’m also pursuing outside scholarships and work to finance my own education. Thank you again. It would be an honor to call myself a USC alumni one day.

@sekere62 Likely just replace/lower your perceived need and consequently also lower the grant money… unfortunately.

@orangesluvr99, it sounds like you may have a basis for an appeal based on financial and family hardships. As @CADREAMIN mentioned in a prior post, USC is going to want documentation to support the appeal. Good luck.

Hey for those who have gotten scholarships, where did you view your scholarship? Is it on your portal, or does USC send you an email?

For those who received a university scholarship for 3750 and are NMF, I will share what happened with our FA last year. I called FA many times and got all possible answers (it all stays, the university schol goes away, the university schol changes). In the end, the university scholarship was reduced…twice. Once, when the NMF 1/2 tuition was added, and twice, when they found out he was a NMSC 2500 scholar (one that gets the $2500 directly from NMC). I would expect to keep some, but not all of the university scholarship in the end, and you may have to wait a while to find out the final award. If you get to keep it all, you can just be extra happy. @Booajo @green26knight @netopspin

Can anyone provide insight into why I should choose or not choose USC Marshall over Indiana Kelley? I already posted in the regular college selection forum, but I know a lot of you are very knowledgeable in USC and may have extra insight or information that could help in my decision. I do love USC, but Kelley is cheaper. Neither requires loans.

@boloking D got an email from USC telling her she was awarded Viterbi scholarship. This is not listed on her FA page,. A nice bump if it is straight in added on top of her FA package.

Another question is outside scholarships. Do they reduce the FA offer or count outside scholarships to the parental obligation? We have a lot to figure out with fA.

Always best to check with USC FAid office, but in our case, S1 had Trustee plus they added a University Scholarship of about $3750 or so, which stacked and lasted all four years. He received no FA (need based). S2 got awarded need-based FA grants which were reduced by each merit scholarship he received. In fact, USC asks what outside merit awards student is receiving (on FA forms) and they will use those awards to also reduce their total aid, as they consider all assets/sources of income when determining their calculations of “need.” It can be disappointing to learn that merit cancels out need-based FA grants, for sure. Merit, otoh, often stacks, as S2 had departmental merits awards from 2 majors. One more thing–any cash award that comes through USC (new merit awards, prize money for winning competitions, etc) will cause an adjustment to FA grant aid even during the course of the school year. Ouch.

Just want to clarify again— merit grants often (almost always) stack with other merit. One poster mentioned a University Scholarship grant adjusted downward, so I am adding the “mostly” qualifier. But FA need-based grant awards do NOT stack with merit. This means NMF Presidential awards (half-tuition plus $1000/year from USC) will take away from any FA need-based awards. However, the student received University Scholarship (merit)) may or may not be adjusted. Any additional merit awards–like departmental awards–should stack on the Presidential. Congratulations to all the students who are receiving these late-breaking awards.

@Tor1727 , congratulations on two great choices. I am familiar with both schools and business programs. Here are some possible considerations when comparing Marshall Business School at USC with Kelley Business School at Indiana Bloomington:

  1. While Indiana University is ranked significantly lower than USC on USNWR (90 vs 21), a variety of undergrad rankings put IU Kelley Business school in the top 10 to 15 whereas USC Marshall typically is higher up and often does not get the respect deserved. Rankings are very subjective so I don’t put much faith in them, but Kelley is often ranked in the top 10.

  2. In USC’s favor, if you decide you do not care for business, USC is strong in many other fields if you want to change majors, as compared with Indiana which is weaker. On that same note, the majority of students at Marshall may be higher in stats than the majority at UG Kelley. However there will be many bright students who were early admits in the Honors program at Kelley.

  3. Location is in USC’s favor in terms of vibrant city and close to possible internships. Downtown is a short metro ride or Uber from USC. IU Bloomington is in the middle of the countryside/farmland. I believe Indianapolis is over an hour away the IU campus. The location may also be a factor in terms of jobs after graduation. Although Kelley has a strong national reputation, the odds are higher that you may be recruited first by companies in the Midwest including Chicago. However, if you are a top student, you may have opportunities on the East Coast and other areas as well.

4)Yes, cost is a huge difference. Are you instate or out of state Indiana? Instate would be very cost effective but even out of state with highest honors would cost somewhere between $32,000 and $35,000 for tuition, room and board. Without honors, OOS IU is about $48,000 versus $75,000 at USC or roughly $47k with Presidential or NMF half tuition. Also, just about everything in CA is more $$ than Indiana, from car insurance if you decide to have a car to dining, housing, and entertainment. The extra funds saved by going to Indiana Kelley could go a long way towards grad school or other endeavors.

  1. Both universities have great school spirit, if that is important. Indiana basketball is trying to build back up but the football team is generally middle of the pack to lower in Big Ten football, whereas USC is usually at the top of the Pac 12 and a possible contender for more.

  2. USC may have a stronger reputation for International Business, particularly in Asia. Both Kelley and Marshall do not always get the recognition deserved. Die hard USC fans will say the Trojan Family Alumni network is strong nationally but my impression is that Marshall is recognized more in Southern California and the West Coast, whereas many companies recruit at Kelley for the Midwest, Chicago… Strongest students will likely have opportunities outside of these areas.

  3. I have heard that many companies like to recruit from Kelley because of the hard work ethic perception of the Midwest students (sometimes preferred over Michigan or some Ivies), whereas you may sometimes get some negative stereotypes of USC business students, although the “spoiled children” one may be waning as compared with twenty or thirty years ago.

8)Class size should be smaller at USC than Kelley and likely more flexibility to pick up a minor versus the big state school at Indiana.

Can’t say you “should” choose one over the other. There are many factors to consider, from cost to location, where you want to live and work after you graduate, what type of focus in business you might be interested in… In any case, there is a start to some potential differences. Good luck!

@CaveMom That’s interesting. Not sure USC wants to cap university scholarship amount on top of NMF 1/2 tuition. DD didn’t get $3750, only $2000 (which could be already reduced once before we knew it :)) ).

@sekere62 as @madbean mentions (but didn’t tag you so I will just to make sure you see it)

“In general” at USC we have found: Merit does not affect other merit. (For instance D got a one-time scholarship of 5k from outside org for soph year. Did not affect other 3 scholarships amounts USC has given her.)

“In general” at USC outside scholarships WILL reduce the amount of “need based” aid USC gives. I am not sure how they prioritize but in general (with most schools that I’ve seen) if you get need based aid of X amount and get a scholarship/grant of Y amount the school will subtract Y from X and change your award to Z (Y-X=Z).

But some schools apply it first to work hours, some apply it to loans and some to cash awards. You should check with USC as I don’t recall how they do it. Hope this helps.

(BTW, D’s Uni scholarship is less than 3700. IIRC it is only 2k. The Dept. Scholarship is a bit higher. I have no way of knowing this, but it appeared that USC adjusted our D’s costs to come relatively close to our in-state full-pay costs at a UC. I don’t know if they are that strategic, but it worked well in our case. She wanted to go to USC and with the awards it was “about the same” as her cheapest good option (except going to Canada) and much less outrageous than some others.)

hi all! when does class enrollment/registration start because i see from the catalogue that a lot of spaces are being filled up for autumn of 2018

@myvineandfigtree where can you see the course catalogue?

@myvineandfigtree You pick courses at orientation, they have spaces set aside for some classes, and some will be filled. You have so many classes to take as a new freshman it’s won’t be a problem.

@ZoruaUSC No, but there are plenty of great options, the Village is mostly sophomores, he should enjoy living around as many freshman as possible where he is going to meet the most people, which helps create a solid and important social environment for all four years at USC.
