@NotJustAMom2022 you’re welcome
@NotJustAMom2022 The admitted student session is a rah rah session to help kids decide but also to pump up those that have already committed. Comes with a lot of pride - we went even though daughter was 100% committed and paid up, but just a 5-6 hour drive for us. It is always great to hear Brennan talk and they pull out the band, it is a fun day. It is where I had that Hallmark moment that this was the perfect school FOR HER even though I had been there a zillion times, and I will never forget that moment. It is fun to be there after you know you are admitted, it’s a neat feeling for them. She met a lot of people there too, so started finding her peeps. Then she had the whole summer knowing she made the right choice and texting new USC friends she met. It was a really special day and trip for us, so we found it totally worth it. It’s a one time kind of thing, don’t get a do-over, so we didn’t want to miss it. Not a must do, but a lot of fun.
@CADREAMIN Thanks for another perspective. We actually only live about 60-90 minutes away from USC, but my kiddo goes to a charter school so I have been driving in traffic for the last four years and I try to avoid it when it’s not necessary. Sounds like this one might be worth it.
@NotJustAMom2022 You’re welcome. It’s a feel good kind of day for both of you if driving is an option. Makes writing those big checks less painful going forward if you have this day in your memory. Once your student goes to USC, there actually isn’t that many times you are on campus with them, and it is fun when it is a new place for both of you. Once it is home to them, parents can be this thing they walk around with “in tow” when they visit. lol. Enjoy that “they are happy to have you with them” feeling there while you can!
Flying across country if you are already sure, then certainly a different consideration.
Has anyone had any experience with moving-in a day or two after the scheduled Move-In Day? If so, did it go smoothly with people still being available to help you?
I will be returning back to the US from a Summer Trip on the night of August 15 in Virginia. I know I will be missing Convocation which I am bummed about. What other memorable events will I be missing on Move-In Day and the next day or two following it?
Off the topic… (because I am actually watching Layer Cake again now)
- Favorite movie about or involving or featuring a college or the college experience?
Comedy: probably Animal House or Legally Blonde. Drama: The Social Network. Others?
- Favorite movie most people have probably never seen? Layer Cake. Great movie… horrible title. It led to Daniel Craig becoming James Bond… but its to me better than any other Daniel Craig movie. Director Matthew Vaughn’s first film. Also began Tom Hardy’s and Sienna Miller’s careers.
Others?
@WWWard, a movie about father/son college tour, Brad’s Status, was both funny at times and reflective. Some found it boring though.
@Nomorelurker Is that with Ben Stiller? I guess I’ll have to check it out…
@WWWard is there a difference between Admitted Student Day and Explore USC day?
@caroline3206 Here is how USC Admissions explains them…
Preview USC: Preview is formatted much like our Meet USC program. It is a 3.5 hour program that begins with an admission session with an admission counselor and student intern. Then students will participate in a campus tour that is followed by a session with the academic department to which you’ve been admitted. Throughout the day, students will hear about housing, campus life, and the transition to USC. Preview USC is held on six different dates.
Explore USC: Explore USC is the most extensive campus visit program we offer. These are day-long sessions that provide you with a highly structured, in-depth look at USC. You will meet current s USC students, hear about their experiences, tour the campus and the surrounding neighborhood, receive detailed information about your course of study, learn about student life, meet professors, and dine in a residential dining hall. The admitted student may attend free of charge and guests are charged a $50 fee per person. We will host five Explore USC events this spring.
Admitted Students Program: This is a great option for students and families hoping to visit USC on a weekend. This is an all-day event that will be held on April 26th. Registration begins in the morning and sessions will last until about 4:00pm. Arrive in the morning to attend all of the sessions that pertain to your questions! This open house provides students with the opportunity to tour the campus and surrounding neighborhood, meet faculty and staff from the various departments, and receive answers to all of your USC questions. This is also the only program where you have an opportunity to tour the University’s residential facilities.
@WWWard responding to your post #5372 - we loved the movie “College Road Trip” with Martin. It was so funny, so true in some parts, and so poignant in the end.
If we have submitted our housing app already, is it possible to edit housing preferences after we’ve attended Explore USC?
@dreambig18 Yes absolutely, up until the date and time the housing app closes. You can change it as many times as you want. They don’t download your app until it closes. We literally changed Ds first choice and added something totally new just minutes before it closed and she got it. The time submitted originally is what is used for priority of choices. Making changes to your selections never impacts that original time stamp.
I was emailed on Jan 26 that I was no longer considered for the top awards, but I would still be considered for other scholarships. I got an admission offer on March 26, but I haven’t heard anything about scholarships.
Will USC send an email about scholarship a few weeks later?
@
@WWWard, yep, Ben Stiller does a good job, although criticized by some reviews for too much “whiny” monologue narrative. The movie is arguably more about the father’s midlife crisis than it being about the kid. Imagine that!
@kimrin All Merit awards have been issued per Admissions office
@CADREAMIN when does the housing app close?
@WWWard thank you. I don’t post much but through lurking and reading information your insights and knowledge have been so appreciated.
@Caroline3206 You’re welcome
