Does anyone know if the admit rate for Marshall is higher or lower than the other schools?
Hi!!! Congrats. Iām a senior from Atlanta GA who is a hopeful USC student for writing for Screen and Television. Would you mind if I asked a couple questions. Literally USC writing for Screen and Television is my dream. Iām also an African American student
Yes! My daughter applied and she was accepted in Jan. There is a separate WBB thread also. Please feel free to join there and post.
@SlimJim005 Interesting question. I would think Marshall would be one of the toughest to get into. You should be able to find that out with a little googling. Admit rates should be posted per program. Not sure what would be more difficult to get into. Maybe the film school.
The School of Cinematic Arts is traditionally the hardest program to secure an acceptance to⦠with admit rates from 2-7%, depending on the major being sought. But with an overall USC admission rate projected to fall to 12% this cycle, all programs are now highly competitive. Marshall and Viterbi are certainly among the hardest individual Schools to gain admission to, simply due to the # of applicants - each applying for a limited # of spots.
Do you know what the 2018 CAMS accept rate was? I know Production last year was 3.5%
Is anyone else concerned about safety on and off campus at USC? I was so sad to read of the Thornton student killed yesterday. I know that USC canāt control what happens a mile off campus, but do students feel safe on campus?
I am concerned about the kidās safety all the time. Whether they are going to a party off campus, a frat party, a trip for vacation, driving just about anywhere, etc⦠I would not worry about USC any more than any other school or city they live in. As parents, we just worry. USC and all colleges worry about safety for the students.
Sad news for certain yesterday. Praying for the family and friends.
Itās sad to hear about another USC student being murdered, but what was this student thinking being off-campus at midnight? I have lived in Southern Cal my entire life, and I have visited the USC campus numerous times, and loved the campus. However, despite what some people will argue saying āall campuses have troubleā, the fact remains that the surrounding neighborhoods of USC are extremely dangerous at night, and not very safe during the day either. Thatās why I chose not to apply to the school last year.
I remember one evening - right at dusk - I was stopped at a stoplight not too far from USC when a police squad car pulled up beside me with two officers inside. The driver rolled his window down and asked me what I was doing in this neighborhood at night. I told them I was driving through on my way home. They warned me that this is not the place for someone like me to be at night and told me that they would escort me to a āsafer areaā. They drove beside me for a couple miles and then took off.
I believe that the USC campus is safe, but getting there and leaving there at night is another story.
A good family friend grew up in LA and told me that you have to stay on USCās campus to feel safe. You donāt leave at night. Also, she said that you always make sure that your car is full of gas, so you donāt have to refuel nearby. Iāve heard USC is moving to have all freshmen and sophomores living on campus to cut down on crime that the students experience.
@BelJeanW The same thing happened to me even though my common app was complete. When I called them they said they had sent the email with portal info but something happened with their servers so the email bounced back, but all they had to do was re send it. Just give them a call and hopefully thatās all it is
Hi you guys, I just checked my USC portal and I found out that my midyear report row was removed from the checklist. Iāve submitted it before and they has received it b/c I can see it on the checklist yesterday. Is there something wrong with the system or anything else? Iām just being a total paranoid when the decision starts to come out
Mine was gone too⦠Just checked it, but it still shows up in the āWe have received the following documents from you:
02/04/2019 04:45 AM - Mid Year Transcript.ā
@AlexGip That happened to me too a while ago. I think itās normal. Mines still in the Received Documents. Weāre probably fine as long as itās been received.
Also I second the paranoia haha!
@romns116 No⦠not for certain. But I suspect it is circa 7%.
As for the issue of safety on or near USCās campus, I too was of course concerned as a parent sending one and then two daughters across the country from Florida to L.A. But⦠based on my daughtersā accounts and on my own visits over time, my fears have lessened greatly. Parents are especially always going to worry⦠and no matter where their kids go to college, but the DPS safety zone around USC is rather large and well monitored with safety patrols, etc. They also provide campus cruisers and even free Lyft rides.
Here is a link to a variety of topics related to student safety at or near USC: https://dps.usc.edu/patrol/
There are of course areas outside of the USC DPS patrolled zone that should be avoided⦠just as there are areas to be avoided in most major U.S. cities. The Niche college rankings puts USCās safety grade at B and is based on dozens of public data sets and on student, alumni and faculty reviews.
For those curious⦠USC ranks #20 overall on the Niche College Rankings and its grades are: A+ for its Overall Niche Grade⦠and then by category: Academics A+, Value A+, Diversity A+, Campus A+, Athletics A+, Party Scene A+, Professors A+, Location B+, Dorms A-, Campus Food A-, Student Life A+, Safety B.
USC compares quite well in terms of safety with other elite colleges and universities⦠for example, in terms of safety - here are othersā grades for the colleges and universities ranked higher than USC via Niche:
MIT B, Stanford B-, Harvard B, Yale C, Princeton B+, Penn B, Columbia B, Duke C+, Brown B-, CalTech B, Wash U in St Louis A-, Rice B-, Notre Dame B, Northwestern B, UChicago B-, Vanderbilt B-, Dartmouth B. So only Princeton and WashU are ranked higher than USC in terms of safety.
Here is an excellent article about todayās U.S. Department of Justice international case revealing just how far some wealthy parents were willing to go to cheat the system and get their kids into elite colleges⦠like Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, University of Southern California, UCLA and the University of Texas.

Sad indeed. College admissions is hard enough without having to compete again fraud and deception too. Glad to see they are cleaning up the system⦠at least some.
Since all of the other schools at USC seem to have single-digit admit rates, is Dornisfeās admit rate slightly above the overall acceptance rate for USC?
As to safety at USC, my son is finishing is first year and we have visited him a few times.
It is just as WWWard states. If you use common sense, pay attention to the schoolās safety recommendations and use the tools they provide, you will be fine. On campus and within the perimeter I feel as safe on the USC campus as I do when at my daughterās school, The University of Alabama. I live close to Tulane University and can āfeelā the protection at USC much more than at Tulane.
Safety question:
If a late night store run is necessary, are there 24hr convenience stores on campus? Delivery services available?
Iām thinking if the times Iāve had to buy Tylenol or flu meds in the middle of the night.
