USC Class of 2024 Applicants Thread

Yep, I also tuned in to Newsom’s briefing (parents of college students in limbo likely spiked the ratings!) and similarly noticed the call out from USC Student Health.

Guessing some of you also watched the event last night with President Folt and many others, where she acknowledged the continuing uncertainty and said they expect to hear from CA Dept. of Health regarding their on-campus plans “within the next day or so.”

Way back in March, who would have thought we would be here two weeks before school starts? This is just nuts. Will be wild if housing they already committed to is yanked out from under people, on top of a million other wild impacts of all the daily changes. It’s ugly for everybody, I can’t imagine all the planning USC has stopped and started that is undone everyday. Feel bad for the students, families and the schools. No winners here. Sad.

^^^ Very true. So sad… and especially for those who graduated in May and for those who will be graduating in 2021. My rising senior is just returning and making the best of it. The only real remaining question on our end will be work study. I doubt her on campus job will even be available. While USC FA likely makes federal work study a component of everyone’s FA summary, there cannot really be that many remote jobs to go around. Time will tell… but that time is also rapidly arriving.

We are trying to figure out if mine slow boats the classes this fall and delays graduation…she is wondering if the great (but some older) professors in her major classes will return even to do the zoom classes or if they chose retirement, etc. Everything is up in the air for so many in so many regards.

^^^ So true. Mine will graduate on time regardless. C’mon vaccine and soon. My prediction (hopeful guess) is that we may have one by Christmas. Here’s hoping…

Charges posted to student accounts yesterday… so it is all getting real and fast - and regardless of this stranger than fiction reality we are all facing.

From USC: For Fall Semester 2020, USC will be reducing combined central student fees, including health and activities fees, from approximately $500 to $100 for undergraduates and from approximately $450 to $100 for graduate students. During the fall, Student Health Center providers will offer telehealth and in-person healthcare services to those students living on or near campus; and telehealth services to those throughout California, as well as offer outreach services to all students, regardless of geographic location. Fall university activities will include a variety of live virtual performances, concerts, speaker series and much more.

I didn’t realize that the bills were up so thanks for telling us @WWWard but I’m confused - it says they are due 7/24/20 - ummm maybe that’s a typo? Do they mean 8/24/20??

I’m glad they will be hosting virtual events for the students. I know that my daughter’s main activities will still be recruiting new members in the fall. Haven’t heard about her club sport but she’s doubtful that it will happen.

Roommate Search
Hey guys!
I decided to go to Pepperdine but my friend and I are getting an apartment in Santa Monica (short lease) from August through November. My friend is paying about half for his own room, but I am looking for someone to share a room and split the cost with. You would pay $950/month, utilities included, fully furnished, and a $1,166 security deposit. I’m looking for someone pretty quick so message me or DM me on IG: Maxles1999 if interested! Thanks!

@CAtransplant Yes… likely a typo. I just tend to pay by day one of the new term.

Ya, it’s always due by first day - I “think” the original start date was 8/24, so it is first based on that, then a typo for the month!

@WWWard Are you thinking they will adjust those activity health fees down on the students statements? Still showing full rate for now…

Hey all, a couple links that you may not think to go to that provide good info and latest news. Gonna post on other site too incase this thread starts closing up eventually and moves to new class thread.

@WWWard and @CADREAMIN that makes sense about the due date.

For fees, I am seeing:

student services fee $100
new student fee $100
tuition refund insurance $104.41

Are you seeing fees higher than those?

I haven’t heard any news from the Governor today. I guess we’re still in waiting mode.

@CAtransplant Oh I thought health fee meant changes to student insurance “For Fall Semester 2020, USC will be reducing combined central student fees including health and activities fees, from approximately $500 to $100 for undergraduates.” We have always waived that, but if it was drastically reduced would consider putting her on it as well incase some of the services she uses through USC end up not being covered by our PPO (they always have been, just being cautious in this upside down world we are in).

Health Insurance $782
The Student Service Fee is $100
Tuition Insurance $118.02

@CADREAMIN

I’m not sure about any further health fee reductions. We only see these charges/fees so far… Off-Campus Medical Insurance Fa2020 782.00, Undergraduate Tuition Fa2020 29630.00, Student Services Fee Fa2020 100.00

We have always just waived the tuition insurance. With two kids at USC and 16 semesters overall, it has saved me over $1600. For those who want to save a bit, you can go and waive it on the Web Reg portal. But I guess it could be theoretically helpful for some.

My understanding was that they were reducing the student health fee from somewhere between $400 to $500 to the $100 it is now. I didn’t think they were going to reduce the health insurance cost.

Thanks for clarification…that makes sense. Ya we have been waiving USC insurance since 2011 often for two kids at once - so ya, no sense in stopping now, ha.

From Daily Trojan social media last night:

BREAKING: All residents, resident assistants, faculty and staff are prohibited from moving into @uschousing until @lapublichealth grants approval, Residential Education announced in an email to RAs Wednesday. RAs were scheduled to move in Aug. 7 per their contract agreements.

oh crud, just what students need, more uncertainty! ugh.

@saltyandpeppery I saw that also on the Daily Trojan twitter - they are a good account to follow. Also, someone on the parents Facebook page posted that they attended a webinar about housing this morning at 8:30 and they were told that USC Housing and Dining announced that one person will be allowed to help students move into their dorms this fall if the dorms are allowed to open. Note; i haven’t seen this in writing anywhere or heard it myself so take it with a grain of salt - just reporting what another parent said they were told on a webinar! There is another webinar for parents at 4 pm today also about Housing so I signed up for that one. I believe this is for parents of freshmen as it was found on the Welcome app which I think only goes to freshmen? Note, this afternoon’s said on the app it’s supposed to be for students with housing contracts only, but was able to register for it so I thought I would check out what they were saying even though we do not have a housing contract, being freshmen and still waiting.
