USC Merit Scholarship Interview

alamemom, alas alas I know of several kids who interviewed for Trustee and, instead, received presidential (and one or two who received Dean’s). For my s’s very specific major they interviewed 2 for Trustee (don’t know how many for Presidential) and only one Trustee was offered. The following year, same tiny major, they interviewed 2 for Trustee as well. That year, the young woman who received it decided to attend MIT. There was, therefore, no Trustee scholar in the major in this year’s entering class. All this is just anecdotal, as we certainly don’t know such details about most of the kids applying. But from attending Explore, many of those kids kept in touch and let each oth er know their outcomes.

For Trustee, it seems they interview around 300 (in the past), perhaps offer 200 of those full Trustee, and about 135 or so matriculate. I don’t have guestimates for Presidential, sorry. But as HImom reminds us, all NMFs who list USC as their first choice (and are accepted to USC!) automatically get half-tuition paid for four years. Sweet!

Best of luck.

Also, USC does NOT require you to name them as 1st choice until AFTER you’ve decided you’re planning to attend. My S listed undecided until after April 1, when he decided that he would indeed be attending USC. Some other schools penalize you if you don’t name them as the 1st choice at the earliest opportunity (BU was one such school).

madbean, I have also seen a few posts about movement between Trustee and Presidential. It seemed to me hawaiiboy was asking if there were many who interviewed and were not offered a scholarship at all. I don’t recall seeing any saying they were not offered at least a Dean’s scholarship, and only two (in the very small sampling of College Confidential) who were not offered one of the two “big” scholarships after interviewing for them.
