USC Recent Happenings & News

@UCBUSCalum Very few. If there… all USC-affiliated housing will let you stay. But… technically, you are not allowed to go back to on campus housing. Off campus… its up to the individual, but I do not recommend going back.

There were 1400 still living on campus per a report maybe 10 days ago…

@WWWard @CADREAMIN Thank you. You both provide great insights, comments and advices regarding USC to concerned students and parents. My Son’s roommates are not in their USC apartment. Two are home in So. CA, one in Oregon and Son is home in No. CA.

Yesterday, we received an USC email that the students have a choice to take a class for a grade or pass/no pass, a week after final grades are posted. USC is more than accomodating to students during this difficult time. Also, the USC Student Health reported, by email, that there have been new cases of COVIT 19 infections among USC faculty, students and staff the past few days.

@UCBUSCalum Was thrilled about the pass/no pass option being extended as it makes decision easier for them instead of guessing if grade will help or hurt gpa. They are doing good at taking the pressure off.

I am still trying to figure out what they are going to manage all the stuff left in dorms depending on when people can get it out to retreive it - but it’s not like someone from NYC should come out just to pick up a comforter and some posters, ha. And they need to turn those rooms around in terms of maintenance, cleaning, etc. Mine is in outside apartment, so we are just paying for it…but nothing to complain about really, she is in same place through senior year so all good there. We may take an adventure down 1 (see avatar, ha) from Norcal to get some of her things being it looks like she is here for awhile…would just have to stop for gas once up and once back. Just seeing how each day is playing out. For now, I am enjoying this rare time at home with her!

USC certainly has their hands full with a million details to manage.

Just posting to spread word everywhere:

International students in Los Angeles who are having trouble finding flight routes home can reach out to the university’s travel service for advice and guidance

"International students in Los Angeles who are having trouble finding flight routes home can reach out to the university’s travel service for advice and guidance. Please contact Ginny Boyce or Shannon Boyd Jr., Crown International Travel Inc @ Altour Telephone: 310-475-5661 Email: ginny.boyce@altour.com; Email: shannon.boyd@altour.com.” International students who are currently in their home countries can contact their local USC office for support.

Not sure emails will post, but phone number should, ask for Ginny or Shannon.

Hoping to see USC put out the same kind of press release and email! Any good news is great to see these days - I like to see positivity in planning.

My son needs to have his guitar shipped home from his dorm. Any suggestions?

His roommate isn’t returning either.

@romns116 Shucks, I was just there this past weekend getting things from my daughter’s apartment that she can use at home the next couple months. Not sure I could have sweet talked my way in anyway, but I would have tried, ha. That’s one thing I haven’t heard about - but I know some kids are still staying on campus (the ones that couldn’t go home). The one I knew there just left a week ago, so I got nada there. Did you call and ask what your options are?

@CADREAMIN That’s so thoughtful of you!

We’ll call Housing on Monday. He does have some friends still on campus, but they have no way to get inside his room. I’m sure he isn’t the only student in this predicament, but I wanted to reach out to my Trojan parents here just in case anyone has dealt with this.

I’ll post an update in case it helps other people in a similar situation.

If he has friends there, I bet they could be given permission and escorted in (with proper spacing of course)! If shipping, I assume the fed ex at village is open and there is also UPS on nearby, just down Hoover. Either should be able to pack properly to ship. I would probably feel better about village location cause it’s right there. It is fed ex, but ups picks up there too. But I remember there is issue with tracking if sending ups out of there so may have to just send fed ex out of that location. (You can drop off prepay UPS box to ship out of there, but they can’t give receipt.) They need to be sure to insure appropriately.

@romns116 USC Storage (a division of USC Housing) can store things for the summer and deliver it to wherever you want on or near campus in August… or they can ship it home for you via UPS. You can reach them via (800) 934-9313 or uscstora@usc.edu

Thanks @CADREAMIN and @WWWard ! We will start with USC Storage, since the email from housing said packing and storage would be at no charge for students that cannot return.

@romns116 I joined the USC Parents FB page, don’t know if you are on there, but there is someone who posted on there that his USC son and his son’s teammate started a little business helping students get their stuff moved out and shipped to them. Hopefully CC will let me post the website (I have nothing to do with it but hope it will help you and maybe others) www.swiftmove.org

@romns116 you’re welcome. good luck getting it all resolved…

“Beginning on Monday, April 27, we plan to offer students the opportunity to return to campus to pack and move out their belongings. USC Housing shares additional details about the schedule, check-out process, social distancing requirements, campus vehicle access and parking.”

I guess ya’ll received info via email on this? I’m curious how many are there today scooping up their things!

Still working towards in person fall classes YAY!

Summer Sessions 1 & 2

Several weeks ago we announced we would continue remote learning for Summer Session 1 (May 20 – June 30). Given the uncertainty of when stay-at-home orders will be lifted, we are now announcing that all Summer Session 2 courses (July 1 – August 11), and all related in-person activities, will be conducted online.

The grading policy for the summer sessions will revert to those used prior to the Spring 2020 semester; that is, students can elect the grade options normally available for the course and follow the regular deadlines to make their elections.

Planning for Fall 2020

We are deep into planning for a safe and appropriate return to campus of faculty, staff, research, graduate and professional, and undergraduate programs. To do so, we must take into account how best to test for the virus, contact trace, and physically separate those who come back to campus. We are focused on returning to activities in clinical care and clinical education, research, teaching, learning, and creative and athletic experiences that recognize the risks of the spread of the disease. All of this forward planning is being done with the full recognition that what we do at USC forms the foundation for successful lives and careers, and is the basis of a strong civil society. We will provide additional details on what we are calling “Project Restart” in the coming weeks and hope to announce our plans for the fall semester in the next two months, with the understanding that circumstances remain in flux.

Study abroad cancelled for fall. Not unexpected but sad for those that had plans in place.

I like it - from the email sent today…they have been good with updates

We know that you are anxious for answers and we are asking our Project Restart groups to work quickly. We hope to announce much of what our Fall 2020 semester will look like in June…

…We will be fully operational Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, offering our full roster of courses and degrees, as we have been and will be doing this summer. We also will be welcoming our incoming classes. We are exploring a range of scenarios, with significant public health provisions, that will allow us to offer our courses in person, while also ensuring most, if not all classes will be available, in parallel, online.

The first phase in re-opening campus activities over the summer includes establishing strict physical distancing protocols for a ramp-up of on-campus research and clinical education. Longer term, we are planning for a full return to campus operations when it is safe to do so, including all academic programs, athletics, and large-scale gatherings. Most importantly, our commitment to providing an exceptional education, in and out of the classroom, is unchanged.

As we have persevered this semester and stayed in close contact from across the globe, we continue to be moved and energized by the overwhelming support and the creative ideas we have received. Our entire leadership team thanks you sincerely for your input, your resilience, and your care for yourselves and for your communities. We very much look forward to seeing you back on campus – eager to work and prepared to be safe.

Besides UC’s opening this fall, UT Austin just announced they will return as usual end of August and run through Thanksgiving, with students then returning home for reading days (what students call dead week) and remote finals. This gives time for anyone infected while traveling to have potentially worked through it before returning to school.

Love seeing the big school plans, I am confident in USC to have some fab plans and adjustments in place while taking great care of their students!

Just to be clear, the UCs will not be completely open. And being open for lectures is very different than being open for research which is different than the dorms being open.
