Used car advice

So we had 2 mazdas with black leather seats. It’s really not that bad. The air conditioner also works fast. You will enjoy the car.

Keep up on the recalls https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/mazda/cx-5/2016/reliability

I think your dad is giving you sound advice. Car buying is like college shopping. When cost matters it makes good sense to stick to the list of priorities. For a car that includes things like gas mileage, availibility of parts and garages that can work on them, and dependability. Choosing a car based on color or the number of air vents is a luxury I could never afford. The car with lower miles should last longer and if it has better gas mileage it will save you money in the long run. It sounds like that’s a better investment. Maybe the money you save on gas could go toward paying off the car loan.

Ok, I am overwhelmed again. I had asked for more pictures because they didn’t have any good interior pictures on their website. She sent me a video today but by the time I got off work and could call she said that the blue one had sold today. I went ahead and filled out the credit app online because they are offering 2.9% for 60 months which is better than what my bank offered. They haven’t sent it in yet because they said it is only good for a limited time, but said that I am within the parameters and should qualify.

Here is the problem. The dealership is 3 hours away and I won’t be able to get there until Saturday since I just started a new job and can’t take time off yet. You can pay a deposit to have them hold it but it is $1,000 and non-refundable. That’s a lot of money and I don’t know whether I should take the chance or wait until the weekend and hope they still have it.

$1,000 non-refundable? Non-refundable, really? Either go Saturday or find a different dealer/seller.

Personally, I’d tell them to take a long walk off a short pier as they used to say in the old days.

I would talk to a manager that your willing to put something down to hold it but it has to be refundable. The problem is then you go and want your deposit back and they will tell you they can only send a check and it will take a month for you to get it etc.

So… Take your chance for Saturday.

There is always something like this

I’m going to just wait and see if it is still there this weekend. I haven’t even driven one or sat in one for that matter. If they still have it at closing Friday night I will plan to go prepared to buy if I like it, otherwise I will just keep looking. I wish there were more options closer to me.

I am curious how you made out.

I would never go with a non-refundable for a car I never saw. It sounds like a dealer trick to get you commit to buying from them.

I don’t know what you car buying experience is. From what I have seen recently, web pricing usually does not include the doc fee (0-$1000). It often can include a discount for financing through the dealer. Cash or outside financing could change the price. I seen dealers increase the price by $1000 if paying cash. Also I have heard many stories of the car being magically sold the the morning you show up. Always ask of price includes: doc fees, reconditioning fees, financing fees or discounts, dealer added options or any other misc fees.

They both sold last week so I didn’t make the trip this weekend. It was a bit strange though, the blue one was still up on the website and had sold marked across it but the gray one just disappeared from the website. Mine is running fine for the time being and I just started my actual underwriter training which is being done virtually so I may wind up working from home, at least until this Covid stuff dies down. I’m going to keep looking online but am not going to worry about it and if I find one and am able to go drive it and it works out I will buy but am not going to be pushed into something like a non-refundable deposit.

Keep in mind what you see sometimes on the web are called “leaders”… They entice your interest. As stated they are magically gone when you arrive “just sold it at 10:00 am” you will hear. So if they print the bin number then you want that as a reference before going.

Well, I still haven’t bought anything. I decided it might be wise to go ahead and do the refinance on my house first(part of divorce agreement, I had 5 years to refinance into my name since we had filed bankruptcy and would not have qualified at the time), and I just finally closed on that December 30th. I am back to looking for a vehicle and it seems like the more I research the more confused I am. Thankfully I am still working from home and haven’t been driving much so I have been able to hold off, but I have no idea when/if we will have to go back to the office. I really don’t feel like I know what I can afford. Right now I’m not spending much on gas or eating out since I am at home most of the time, but who knows if things will stay that way.

I found a 2018 CX-9 Grand Touring that is really nice, but it has 77,000 miles. It is certified pre-owned, so that makes me feel better about it, but it’s still a lot of money and a lot of miles. I have found some CX-5 Grand Touring that I like, but they either don’t have warranty, are priced a bit high, or they sell before I get a chance to look at them. There still isn’t a lot of inventory in my area. I am going to go somewhere and look/test drive tomorrow but can’t decide where to go. Tupelo(50 miles away) is the closest, but their prices seem a bit high. Huntsville(95 miles) has a lot, but most that I would be interested in are a little more than I had hoped to spend. There is also Birmingham (119 miles), Memphis (153 miles), or Nashville (184).

There is a 2017 Ford C-Max Energi (plugin hybrid) offered at $14k in Tupelo, MS:

So, I bought a red 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring with Premium package today.
