For the condiments that go out on the table - various flavors of salad dressing, ketchup, mustard, shaker of Parmesan cheese, soy sauce, butter spray, whatever … It is all contained in a plastic carryall with a handle, we just move it all at once from fridge to table and back versus having to put out multiple bottles. The same kind of carryall a kid might use to transport shampoo, soap, etc to and from a dorm bathroom.
If you have a dog or cat that sheds and gets all over your clothes - put clothes in the dryer on no heat cycle for about 15 minutes before putting them in the washer. It loosens up the hair from your clothes and they end up in the filter.
The marmots will be upset to hear that…
Ammonia has become my new best friend. I put the grates from the gas cooktop in a ziplock bag with some ammonia. Leave overnight and the grime just drops off. It also works well for the oven racks. I have seen the hint for years, but did not pay much attention. It really, really works.
Where are those pesky marmots?? Chewing up the naugahyde again?
Best hack? Get off CC and get busy. Gotta go! :)>-
New fleece is shedding all over everything. I will run it through the dryer. Just washed/dried a top it shed all over and had to use tape to get off most (not all) the fuzz. Any other recommendations besides tape?
Echoing the laundry ones up thread- quick cycle is all one needs (generally) and I wash whites and colors together in cold water.
Honestly, my best hack was marrying a househusband. He does the laundry, the vast majority of the cleaning, and the cooking that rarely happens.
But that’s not especially helpful
White vinegar and baking soda for stubborn kitchen stains, especially coffee stains.
After you disinfect your stainless steel sink (I use cleanser with bleach and let the wet paste sit for at least five minutes), rinse and then polish with a sprinkle of baking soda. It will really make it shine.
Use a Lysol wipe to disinfect the stuff everyone constantly touches. I do the TV remotes, doorknobs, light switches, cabinet and door handles, phone, etc. Then a new one in the powder room for the faucet handles, toilet handle, toilet seat, etc.
Does everyone know the hot vinegar plus blue Dawn dish soap hack for cleaning the soap scum out of the tub? Heat 1 cup vinegar in the microwave, add to a spray bottle & add 1 cup blue Dawn. Sprayall over tub & tile, let sit for a couple hours then do a minimum of scrubbing & rinse. NOTHING ever worked before this combo.
Another use for an empty kleenex box: for those of us without a trash can in the laundry area (my units are in hall closet with no room to spare), I discard the dryer fluff in the kleenex box and then just dispose of it when the box is getting full. In terms of dryer sheets, I bought these blue plastic sort of spikey balls on amazon that have the same effect (puff up your clothes and help them stay soft) but I don’t have to repurchase anything and I didn’t want a scent. I wash many things together but do keep my towels (rough) away from my clothes as I don’t think it’s good for my clothes. After the initial wash for darker items, I’ve never had a problem.
I also leave my roll of plastic liner bags in the bottom of the kitchen trash can so they’re right where I need them.
This one’s relevant only if you’re remodeling a bathroom but I put an outlet in the back of the drawer where I store my blow dryer and it’s always ready to go.
I love these kinds of things. I hope people will keep 'em coming!
Does it have to be blue Dawn or does any dish soap work?
For Swiffer refills, boil water on the stove, put the bottle lid into the hot water for a minute or so, once the plastic is softened, you can twist the lid off and use nail clippers to remove the lock bits, then refill forever. Google it for images
The blue dawn is very viscous & helps the vinegar (which does the real work) cling to the walls of the tub. I would think any other dish soap with the same viscosity would work.
I dilute the dish soap all the time. Beats me why, since I buy Dawn when on sale for 99 cents. I also cut Brillo pads in half (not to be cheap, but because when they rust, it drives me nuts.) I’m sure I can come up with some other things, but I’m supposed to be cleaning now.
I also hate rusted Brillo/SOS pads. They’re disgusting, and then they start to disintegrate. IIRC they sell “minis,” but those are probably more expensive.
Here’s a goofy hack. Last fall, instead of raking the backyard leaves, I started at the house, positioned the lawn mower to suck them up and blow them across the yard. Like mowing but with each pass, kept the blower aimed at the bushes by the back fence. Not a large yard but it saved hours and callouses.
I use the dryer balls, too. I hate dryer sheets and the perfumed scent. I use 3 balls at a time.
I keep a spray bottle under my sink that has mostly water and some squirts of Dawn. When cleaning a big dirty pan, I just spray the dawn/water mix and then scrub. I use this spray for lots of other things, including the range top.
Used dryer sheets are great for picking up dust/hair that seem to gather on baseboards especially in bathrooms.
I cut the tops of Kleenex tissue boxes so that I have rectangle organizers for my bathroom drawer.
It keeps everything neat and in place. They come in different floral prints and are about 2.5 inches deep.
If I have leftover fresh herbs I chop them up and put them in mini ice cube trays filled with olive oil and freeze them.
I also put baking soda and vinegar into clogged drains. When you put the vinegar it bubbles up and after about 15 minutes I run hot water over it to clear the drain.
