D just took the Greyhound from Boston to NYC and back. $15 each way. Why would anyone use the other buslines? Crazy.

The reason by Greyhound’s fare is $15 is because of the Chinatown bus. It used to be higher.

Thanks to the Chinatown bus…!

I believe the $15 Greyhound rate only applies if you order your tickets online.

One more point to the Chinatown Bus convenience - you can run up to the bus 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to leave, throw down $15 cash, and hop on. No internet or credit card needed.

nope. $15 - no reservation. D and friend showed up at Greyhound and bought the tix. They did miss the bus because they did not have an advance reservation and were 5 minutes late. Apparently if Greyhound knew they were coming the would have waited!!! (I find that hard to believe, but that is what they were told)

blucro – apparently the Grayhound doesn’t run as often as the Chinatown bus, which is one reason kids still take Fung Wah. Also, a lot of them don’t KNOW that Grayhound matched prices. Before long, they’ll probably offer more runs, too.

You could perhaps do what Crash did, but if they don’t have seats it ain’t gonna happen. The Chinatown Bus’s have this central reservation system:

These dudes do put pedal to the metal and may not make the NJ Turnpike stop. We called our driver the Bladder of Steel because he held it from DC to NYC…

…or perhaps ala the astronaut assault in Florida his Depends was doing the job.

I recall there’s another Boston-to-NY chinatown bus. Forgot its name. Ask anyone in Chinatown. I don’t think you can beat the $15 anytime faire ( runs every hr early am to pretty late at night ). The drivers I think came mostly from the wickedly winding streets of Hong Kong or Ho Chi Minh City. They are used to driving on the edge. Getting out of NY is no easy task. They have to weave through traffic to keep schedule on.

When driving home on I-95 from our Massachusetts vacation last summer we chose to drive during the night rather than deal with daytime traffic. When I make this drive my speedometer sneaks up to a bit above 75 mph :o. Last year a Fung Wah bus blew by us and was moving back and forth between lanes …it had to be going close to 100 mph. I remember at the time turning to my husband and saying that our D would NEVER take that line if I had anything to say about it.

S has been taking the Chinatown bus for about 5 years, and thank goodness has never had a problem.

My daughter has been taking the Fung Wah bus for about three years. We have tried to switch her over to Greyhound, but she HATES the Port Authority Terminal. Recently, she has been taking “Lucky Star”, the other Chinatown bus, and she says she feels much safer than she did on Fung Wah.

True to my (screen) name, I only send S on Amtrak. It’s not cheap but I don’t worry about highway accidents or inclement weather.
