USNews Rankings - PhD: FSU vs UF vs USF vs UM

We’ve been down this road before. I suggest we agree to disagree.

To facilitate this, the CC has kindly provided a fine piece of cyberspace dedicated entirely to fans of the University of Florida.

Please post there to your heart’s content. Last time I checked, this was the Florida State board.

Let me check…just to be sure. Yep. This is the FSU section of the CC.

I was accepted to both UF and FSU right out of high school, and decided to attend FSU in a heartbeat. I never liked the college atmosphere at UF compared to FSU. I now run an established company in Miami and encounter many unemployed UF grads every single day. Actually, many UF grads stop by the company begging for any kind of job. To this day, I still don’t understand where UF grads get that arrogance from. We all agree that UF is a fine institution, but the “Harvard of the South” it is not. It is more like the “Penn State of the South”, and I mean that in the nicest way.
BTW, why are so many UF cheerleaders on this board. Are you guys so insecure about your “elite” status, that you have to come over the FSU board to claim it? I’m sure you’re all missed over at the UF forum.

It’s because Parent2nole …AKA Cybermom won’t stop slamming UF. I am in my first year at UF and will defend my alma mater, against bitter Seminoles.

we can all dodge the bullet but its simple. UF outranks FSU. ITS better!

Is this post accurate? As of April, 2006 you were a junior in high school aspiring to attend UF?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=178573

That would mean in August, 2006 you would be a senior in high school. How can you be in two places at once?

I am CYBERMOM and I am not PARENT2NOLE. He is a MAN and ALUMNI with 2 DAUGHTERS at FSU. I am a WOMAN and a PARENT of a FRESHMEN MALE ENTERING FSU THIS FALL. I am not slamming UF nor comparing FSU to UF. Don’t drag me into your stupid rivalry. My posts are mainly positive statements about my excitement over the events and happenings at FSU in preparation for my son attending the school in the fall. UF is a great school go back and enjoy it and leave me out of your argument with PARENT2NOLE.

Oops.

I suspect that error will never be made again.

My apologies, cybermom.

(You know, there was another UF fan who thought I was female, too. I think I’m getting a complex…I really need that motorcycle now. )

Out of respect for the fine work you’ve contributed, I shan’t press this issue further. This post can slip away.

FSU has a better International Relations/Poli Sci dept. and has Burt Reynolds as an Alum. Case Closed.

Well Bobby Bowden did have his back surgery at UF I believe, another topic the UF tour guides bring up.

that’s pretty sweet too

:-D I think I know where I’m going to grad school

Many people associated with FSU, including Bobby Bowden, get their medical needs at UF’s Shands Hospital. Shand’s is one of the best hospitals in the southeast and it isn’t far from Tallahassee. It doesn’t surprise me that the UF tour guide brings that fact up. From what I hear, they mention FSU several times during their tour, to bring up comparasions between the schools. FSU grads should take this a complement from our rivals to the south.

Yeah, I agree. Shands likely has lots of docs who got their undergrad degree at FSU (snicker).

Really, all kidding aside, FSU and UF cooperate well on lots of different levels. On the sports field we can be rivals, everywhere else we need to be allies.

You guys and gals are having a spirited debate here, I’ll just chime in and say that while the ranking data is interesting it’s to me not the right metric to be focusing on.

When the rubber meets the road the thing that counts is placements. A school can have the best ranking in the world, but few students are being able to leverage that to gain work or start a career.

I’ll just add one piece of info that I know is real. I worked for a major fortune 500 company and Florida was on our short recruiting list for Mechanical Engineers. I recruited a Hispanic candidate from UF about 5 years back and he has done very well and came to the company very well prepared.

I was accepted into UF honors and FSU honors and I must say, UF students and the whole population of “Gator Nation” are full of themselves. Education in Florida sucks in the first place, so nobody should be bragging about anything. UF doesn’t give out financial aid because they know they will get students to commit regardless of how much money they give them because everyone thinks UF is so great. Guess what, I was also accepted to Georgia Tech and Cornell and BOTH of those schools would be cheaper for me to attend than would UF. I never heard anything about UF being so superior to FSU until UFs recent national championships in football and basketball.

Long story short, I am picking FSU OVER UF and majoring in Actuarial Science while partying my ass off and having a hell of a time watching the Noles stomp all over the Gators once Tebow is gone.

Welcome to the Tribe! :)

I dont know why you guys are using USNews’ rankings, everyone in the college community knows that ranking a college is nearly impossible, you can though make an estimate where a college is. Use the ARWU system its way better. Any way just wanted to say that there is no point of fighting when people say that UF is a better college academically, BECAUSE IT IS. But FSU is a great college, i mean its top 102 in the country (using that crappy system that is so bias), or 78-99 using the ARWU system. You get my point its a great university but its not better than UF academically. I will have to say though that when it comes to social life FSU seems to be way better, i mean i have been to UF before and driving 20 minutes just to get to a Publix is crazy, i dont think i could deal with that. FSU in the other hand is in tallahassee and thats a definite plus.

To sum up, the only reason i would pick up FSU over UF is the social life (with the exception of some careers that FSU is better at).

Too simplistic of a view…using ARWU or USNWR ratings to conclude the quality of two very similar universities so different. These universities are very nuanced places and many of the factors used and claimed so telling simply gloss over reality.

Why is ARWU “way better?” And how does ARWU determine the academic quality of a school? And why do those factors (and not others) objectively determine such quality?

blah blah blah, the point is no one in the world can state as fact that UF is better than FSU academically or in general. What I find great, you may not find great. What I don’t like, you may like. Arguing over such a subjective topic isn’t going to prove anything; it is petty and dumb.

How funny is this that this thread started three years ago, and is still going? This cross-state rivalry seems to be quite the bit of adrenalin-pump in which many, many can participate. I guess that’s the beauty of “FIT”. Go where you fit, and can thrive. Ratings are America’s way of “fast fooding” and shortcutting everything. Let’s not get sucked into them.
