UT Austin Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

It’s a rainy day for me. I got rejected. I guess my major is too competitive.

Anyway, I applied for Computer Science. My stat:

  • GPA 3.75 with 76 credits
  • 2 solid essays
  • 2 recommendation letters
  • Good amount of hours in voluntary

I was wondering the same thing. Have you heard of any McCombs internal transfer acceptances or denials?

got rejected for Computer Science (4.0 gpa, solid application)… seems like spaces are insanely limited again. ---- anyone who was rejected this cycle thinking of applying again in future cycles? is it worth it?

@lemonsofu , just wondering what did your course work look like? Was it super STEM geared and UT still rejected you? Did you have like >>60 credits as a sophomore?

@LifeAlchemist i believe all of my classes (besides 2 honors college classes) were STEM-related: Calc III, Data Structures, Physics calc-based, Lin. Alg, Math Found, Discrete Math to name a few. i have 40 credits completed, not including non-STEM AP Scores (seemed wiser to accept the ones I needed at Austin, so i reported the scores instead).

Planning to apply to transfer in spring of 2020 and am out of state… looking at this thread, it seems like a lot of OOS get rejected with good stats compared to in state applicants that get accepted. Any thoughts on this?

As a general statement out of state applicants have lower acceptance rates then in state regardless of what school. Preference is given to in state studentS and sometimes there are programs between CC’s and 4 yrs in the same state. Unfortunately even if you have really high or “good” stats if you are OOS it will be a little harder because there are fewer spots. I am OOS and fortunately I got it but I also think the major I applied to plays a factor into that. Some majors are very selective and are already to hard to get into so that coupled with being OOS sometimes unfortunately leads to a non acceptance. It doesn’t hurt to try and you will never know if you don’t apply I would not let being OOS scare you too much.

In 2018 the transfer acceptance rate for out of state students was 11.6%.

@mbrito2019 , is there somewhere to see those stats by major?

@oostra, just think of it as a reach. 11.6% is very low, and it also means some majors are even lower, and some more favorable. So, yeah, apply, but it should only be treated as a reach regardless of your stats. My son had a very good GPA, and great extras, and letters of rec… I can’t think of any reason they wouldn’t want him excetpt maybe the content of essays, in which case they just didn’t see him as a fit, and so be it. Oh, and also he never communicated with them, nor visited. That could be a factor too. Good luck. I’m sure you’ll land somewhere good.

Quick edit: You prob know this, but what someone said about schools always being less favorable to OOS students is mostly true, but that’s only for public schools. Private schools would not be like that.

There’s a webinar hosted by one of the orgs at UT. It’s a webinar for transfer students where some UT alumni who were once transfer students speak about their experience transferring to UT and what worked for them. There will also be a Q&A time at the end to get any of your questions about UT answered. It’ll be this Saturday (6/27) at 3PM at this YouTube live link: https://youtu.be/JmYzzsndYdM

Anyone heard back for external fall 2020 transfer decisions yet? Its the July 1st deadline and I’m worried because my application still says in review. Hoping to hear something back by 5pm?

I am in the same boat! From what I have heard, you could still hear back even after the deadline.

Oh wow, really? That’s kinda annoying having to wait even longer. Oh well, hope we both get to hear good news!

I have yet to hear as well. What majors is everyone who is waiting?

applied for womens and gender studies, still waiting to hear back

I applied for Psychology B.S., still in review though

i applied as a gov major, but i’m still waiting for the email back. I think it’s just COLA that’s waiting to hear back

hoping it’s all good news if they made us wait this long!!! fingers crossed

has anyone heard back yet?
