The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign—our flagship, land-grant, world-class institution—has seen an explosion in foreign students in the past few years, mostly Chinese nationals. To give some perspective, in 2000, 37 undergraduate students came from China. Today, there are more than 3,000 Chinese undergrads.

When you count all foreign students, almost 20 percent of undergraduates are from overseas. And when it comes to graduate students, it’s almost half. What happened—and why—to our state university?

In short, because we are broke, we have sold our souls. Even worse, we have done so at bargain prices. For the record, I believe this explosion in foreign students in our universities is a bad idea. As a state institution, we should be devoting our resources to educating our Illinois children, not foreign nationals. As things now stand, we educate more students from China than from any neighboring state—by far.

But whether that is good or bad is an issue above my pay grade, and not why I write. Instead, if you (begrudgingly) accept the major premise that we need the money, then at least let’s do it right. Regarding foreign national students, I suggest we auction off admissions.
