OP, I would dig in a little more with your parents on this point. Certainly the UCs are very different types of educational institutions (with a lot to offer), but I would also add that NE, Villanova and SCU (assuming that’s Santa Clara) would not be comparing “like with like” with Wesleyan. Wesleyan can be differentiated from those schools IMO.

Sigh. I assume the reason you chose to highlight that particular quote of mine was to contradict my point (which was that internships can be used to help this student decide which way to take their professional career). Why else would you call it out to say that the student has “no guarantee” of internships, other than to dismiss my take?
Regardless, this little exchange is not helpful to the OP. I stand by my point that internships can help a potential psychology major at either institution make future career decisions, and some of those directions don’t require grad school. All of the banter about grad school is premature in my opinion.

My first take is -
- People can direct where they want to be by applying for internships they want - which is what you said.
- The second thing I said was - there is no assurance you’d get said internship. And that’s true.

It seems like the parents have made a financial decision and the student disagrees.
Well, in the end, the parents raised them, it’s their money and they’ll get a world class education either way.
It’s easy for an 18 year old to spend all the parent’s hard earned money but the parents, with life experience, may have other thoughts - and there’s nothing wrong with that.
As I grew up, I used to always say - dang, my dad was right!!!

Have you investigated the options & opportunities available at each school for psychology majors ?
First, determine whether you prefer to earn a BA or a BS in psychology, then consider a second major, then examine the internship opportunities facilitated by each program. These steps may help you to look beyond the difference in COA as that is not really a limiting factor for you & your family.
Also, do you have any interest in combining the study of psychology with religion or philosophy ?

Good additional thoughts. One other option to double up with psychology that is not listed in the linked article, which has become popular and, to me at least, very interesting, is economics. Our corporate economist has mentioned this to me several times as a growing area of academic study. We have these economic theories and lots of math that should predict what’s going to happen, and yet people and organizations often don’t make decisions and / or behave in conformity with what we expect. The marriage of the study of economics and the study of human motivation is, to me, a fascinating focus.

I’ve dabbled a bit in what is sometimes called Behavioral Economics. It really is a fascinating, interdisciplinary field, with a lot of very important applications!

And at least for now- highly employable.
Consumer products companies, hospitality (hotel, theme parks, cruise lines), credit cards- behavioral economics is an important addition to what was traditionally just “market research”. There are reasons why a bag containing four cookies and labeled “120 calories” sells for a huge premium (on a cookie by cookie basis) vs. a huge bag of those same cookies. There’s a reason why “all you can eat” is so profitable for cruise lines, restaurants, etc. Related to the observation years ago why casinos don’t have clocks- except now the observation can be quantified and built into the pricing and profitability model.
OP- Psych is a very versatile degree! I would encourage some study of behavioral economics for any psych major!
