How do I apply for financial aid?

The FAFSA is used to evaluate your eligibility for state and federal financial aid and the CSS/Profile is used to evaluate your eligibility for grants, scholarships, and loans particular to UNC.

Do I need to apply for financial aid each year?
**You must complete a new FAFSA each year to **remain eligible for financial aid.
But returning students do not need to complete a new CSS/Profile. UNC only requests that form once.

Financial circumstances change from year to year, which is why the federal government requires an updated FAFSA. You can also contact us at any time during the year if you have a major change in your financial circumstances — something that significantly affects your ability to pay for school. We can’t always make changes to your aid, but we’re happy to consider new information if things have changed.

Remember, they will have an in-depth look at your financial from the CSS profile, which UNC will use to determine how to distribute their institutional aid. They feel that they will not need it in subsequent years because they expect this to remain relatively stable. If there is a major change in finances, trust and believe that the family will contact UNC-CH and will provide all of the supporting documentation.

As you see, they require the FAFSA to make sure that students remain eligible for aid. They will give the student any federal aid that the student is eligible for (including federal loans) based on the FAFSA. It does not mean that they will meet your FAFSA EFC.
