vaccinating males for HPV?

There’s a lot of good information in this video clip:

I love this doctor. And I have to say that I smiled at the incongruity between her sweet, matronly looks and the things she had to say.

Our son’s doctor has not recommended the shots for our him. He just had his 18 year check up last month. I’ve thought about having him get them but I am still on the fence. I have to wonder if one of the reasons not that many males are getting the shots is because the doctors aren’t recommending that they should get them.

My son’s doctor recommended last year he get the shot.

Well, here’s what i fear (re: the vaccine);if the vaccine prevents 70% of the HPV strains, does that give the remaining (more virulent) 30% a competitive advantage? I know I tend to be cynical about medical research, so i may have lost perspective here. Since my daughter had the vaccine, subsequently had several positive PAPs, and ended up having to have a LEEP.

From the Merck website:

GARDASIL is the only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause about 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against approximately 90% of genital warts cases.

GARDASIL also helps protect girls and young women ages 9 to 26 against approximately 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.

GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

My 20 year old D, 19 year old S, and 14 year old S have had the complete series of three injections. I’m in the northeast, and most physicians here recommend it for females and males starting in middle school. All done - no problems - no side effects. Will certainly recommend they all have a booster in the future to ensure as much protection as possible.

As a practical matter, the MD from Columbia seemed to acknowledge that using the available screens to engage in oral sex and not make direct contact was a hard sell. She seemed to emphasize the vaccine.

Has anyone asked their child how it is playing out in their real world? Do they ask each other for proof of vaccination? I’m having dinner with my 24 year old son tonight so I’ll see if I get any answer on this.
