We just bought the Dyson stick V6 at Costco, $70 off a price of just under $300. It has a very small catchment area, but it works like crazy, I cannot believe the stuff it is pulling up.
I have heard that some of the new super soft carpets do not work with Dyson, too soft and too much suction. I am planning to use this for the stairs.
I had to replace my upright Dyson with something when I dropped it off the stairs onto concrete, and the plastic body cracked. The new Dysons had the stupid ball design… Mr B decided to upgrade us to a canister Miele. Immer besser, German engineering marvel, that kind of crap. At first, I missed the Dyson, but I adjusted to the Miele, and like it a lot. Here is what I think.
“The Miele is a bit pricey and uses bags that are purchased separately but lasts a long time. I do not know how a sale price would compare to a sale price on a comparable Dyson. I would also get a feel for different models whatever brand you go for. My biggest complaint about the Miele is that it might not be the best fit for a tall person and might not be as comfortable to use. (Your husband is tall, right?)”
- A comparable Miele costs about 2x Dyson's cost. If it weren't for the wretched ball which I did not want and Mr. B love of German designs, I would have bought another Dyson.
- Miele power brush handles have adjustable heights; mine would work for a very tall person, but going back to #1 - Miele cost 2x.
- Bags don't cost as much my as bags for my old Hoover did because Miele is good at packing as much cat hair as possible into them. They come out heavy. :)
Let us know how you like your vacuum, romani!
O’ course! We’re getting new carpet tomorrow and the vacuum gets here Tuesday so that’ll be an interesting test… let’s see how much stuff it can get out of “new” carpet
I bet it will get a ton of “stuff” out of your new carpet.
Interesting story. I took my old Hoover to a neighborhood garage sale without any intent to sell it (a friend needed it to vacuum a few rugs put out for sale). While I was out running errands, my friend sold the dilapidated Hoover to someone for $50, iirc! It was not worth even $5. Vacuumless, I had to go get a replacement. That’s how I ended up with my Dyson. As soon as I brought it home, I tested it on my freshly vacuumed carpet. OMG, there was so much cat hair in the bin! The old Hoover sucked, and not in the good (vacuum) sense of that word.
Update: Got it today. Took us forever to assemble it because I did something dumb. It handles nicely and seems to pick up a lot. I really like the emptying without actually touching anything. We used it to get down some cobwebs and dust on the ceiling/furniture. Working really well so far.
Thanks for the update! A friend is looking for a vacuum in that price range. I recommended shopping HD site.
This is where I found that deal (ok, admittedly, momma found it for me): http://www.bradsdeals.com/
Cool! Thanks - to you and to your mom, of course!
@romanigypsyeyes: Keep us posted. Inquiring minds want to know how this works out. 'Cause if I can find a lightweight vacuum that actually works well, I might even use it. Maybe.
Unfortunately it’s not very lightweight but I managed to vacuum my room in less than 5 minutes because I really did only need to go over each spot once. It’s easy to maneuver and it easily reached up to my ceiling to get dust and whatnot.
I even used it and didn’t have an asthma attack so it seems to trap the dirt and dust pretty well.
Dog still hates it lol.
I tried that Dyson stick (no ball), V6 on some of that new Monarch Smart Strand silk, I have read that it has too much suction & wow, it does. It is a small head and even with a low nap I could just barely vacuum, fine to pull, nearly impossible to push. I guess these new super soft carpets just don’t work well with Dyson suction.
I’m reading this thread with interest.
I can’t recall the make of vacuum that I had for years. It was from Costco. The last couple of years, I started having problems with it. Took it apart, got out the clogs. Worked for a while, then problems, etc. Finally, just got so bad that it was not salvageable and this happened when I sold my large house and I ditched it the day I moved out (this was last year).
Now, I live in an apartment. When I moved in, I had to buy a vacuum last year. Low budget like romani. I got a Shark Rocket at Bed Bath and Beyond, which works on floors and carpets (I have both). I had to do some assembly. It is very light weight. It swivels. It has handle and extension wand that pulls out. It seemed to be fine and easy to use.
Very recently, it wasn’t picking up well and on one rug, was really doing a number on it, making it look dustier the more I ran it. I then was able to see how it was very clogged up and was able to get all the stuff out of it and got it to be fine again.
Yesterday, it seemed like it was having that same issue with picking up, but not as severe. I went to the same clogging areas as a week or two ago and it was clogged again but not nearly as much (but hey, not much time has gone by…hope it is not an ongoing issue…it was fine for a year).
BUT THEN…also yesterday, all of a sudden, while vacuuming, the whole shaft of the long handle (which when released, is also the extension wand), started to bend, and at first, I thought, I don’t recall the vacuum having a bend feature. Then, lo and behold, the entire shaft had cracked entirely, so that the upper half of the handle/wand totally lifts off. Geez, I’ve only had it about 14 months. Not sure what to do. Can ill afford a new one. Could try duct tape but I can’t imagine the handle staying firmly erect when in use.
It’s a holiday. Not sure what to do about it (can wait a few days of course). Not even sure how to prove the date I bought it (don’t have original receipt). I saved papers that came with it and there is a toll free customer support telephone and it says not to return to store but they help with hassle-free returns. Have no clue if this is covered or what. OY!
While I realize I vented in my post above this one 4 days ago and nobody has since responded, but in case anyone actually read it…I am happy to report that I just called Shark’s toll free help number and after many clicks in the menu and a hold, I got a helpful person. Told her about how the entire shaft of the long handle (which also releases off the vacuum to be an extension wand) broke off. At first, she thought they could just replace the wand/handle to the vacuum. But the bottom part of that is still attached to the vacuum and it won’t release. In any case, I am happy to report that they will send me a brand new vacuum (I did not have to prove the purchase which happened to be May 31, 2014 at Bed Bath and Beyond, though I was asked where and when I purchased it). I was sent a postage free label by email and when the new vac arrives, I have to pack the current one into that box and ship it back. Not too bad! Pleasantly surprised!
Wow! Very cool. Fingers crossed the replacement will live a long and healthy life.
Costco is having a $100 off sale this month on some Dyson vacuum. I plan to fondle it the next time I’m at Costco and see if it does anything for me. They rarely do.
I’m sorry soozie. You responded when I couldn’t figure out how to unsubscribe from threads and all these notifications got buried lol. I’m glad it worked out
Sorry, most of my recent experience has been with Costco and they can provide me a “receipt” if I ask nicely. I generally get help from Costco or the CCard company for my broken electronics. Have rarely needed to work with manufacturers.
I have called the manufacturer (Logitech) when I broke a Bluetooth keyboard but I have no experience with either Shark nor BB&B.
Glad you have had a good experience. Thanks for reporting back.
Before this vacuum, I did have a vacuum for years from Costco at my old house. In fact, that vacuum was a free replacement from Costco, which has amazing return policies. But that vacuum bit the dust and I dumped it when I moved to a city apartment in another state. That’s when I got the Shark at BBB. I’m pretty amazed that I am getting a new one from the manufacturer. I really thought I was going to have to buy another one so soon after buying this one. Just to be clear, I did NOT go through BBB on this matter. I had kept papers that came with the Shark and it explicitly says to not contact the store where it was purchased but to call their number.
