Valentine's Day care packages?

I made double-chocolate cookies with walnuts last night. They went out today with some valentines-day m&ms and several magazines he will enjoy rolled up to snug the box of cookies in place. And a corny card, of course.

Bags of M&Ms, trail mix, and small, loose vittles make great packing materials!

I asked S at X-mas if he wanted the brownie care packages to keep coming. I wondered if he thought it was not “cool.” WRONG!

He said the roommate and people in his dance group loved tham. Score one for Dad.

I still want to know what custard powder is (in the Nanaimo recipe). I guess I could google it, but I’d rather ask you guys.

I tend to send really heavy packages and mostly to the Great Midwest, so the flat rates are a good deal for that.

Why does the PO ask if you are sending liquids? What’s wrong with liquids?

I suppose depending on the container, they could break, leak, etc.

Ah, I am thinking of the package that helped keep Tom Hank’s character alive in Cast Away. Liquids would definitely not survived the crash.

bethie: Thanks for starting this thread. You inspired us, and it’s fun to share.

I’m jealous though. Neither kid will allow me to send baked goods. Pout.

The powder-Bird’s custard powder, a British staple used in Canada quite a bit, available here for the most part

Liquids could break, ruining a whole shipment. There’s a rather long list of forbidden items. I once sent a requested cleaning liquid, Murphy’s Oil Soap to my overseas friends. Or attempted to send, I learned after it was returned months later. Apparently I was placed on some list of People Who Send Forbidden Items. I mind my package contents now, or try to.

GLM is right on the custard, maybe google it to find where it is located nearby

this recipe has some detail to the explanation:

including substitutes for custard powder…of course you could always get one of your border dwelling buddies on CC to make a run to Canada to get you some! I had my first Nanaimo bar in Nanaimo, my Ds take them to friends in California who missed them, though I have seen them in Cali stores, too.

Wow! Learn something new everyday. Had never heard of nanaimo bars or custard power.

I have never heard of Nanaimo bars either. They look incredible, and I think I may make them as one of our Easter desserts. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I kind of lied about sending liquids. I sent milk packs to go with the cookies. Should a Mom not be able to send milk to her kid?

Okay, I’ll confess too: I’ve fibbed about shelf-stable milk packs. Also, I’ve sent shampoo and shower gel and such (in spring break training trip care packages), but I do always seal those things inside a couple of ziplocks. . . .

OK. D is in a dance performance Friday, so all high calorie substances are banned.

I transferred $50 from my bank account to hers. Happy Valentine’s Day in a cybersecond:). Didn’t feel too maternal, but hey, she’s the boss in case I hadn’t figured that out already…

You guys inspired me so I made pink heart-shaped Rice Krispy treats with drizzled white chocolate on top and will send those in the flat-rate box, along with a sappy card and some Valentine’s MnMs to S… who will probably fall over in shock. :D

Wow- they have Bird’s on amazon etc, around $5 for 300g, but the shipping is $6-8!

momof2inca- it’s good to keep’em guessing!

crabbylady and somemom, thanks for the recipe links. BC is not too far from where I live, but my first experience with the bars was at Nordy’s coffee shop at the local mall. Ooohhh, good stuff!

Off to the grocery store and the local World Market which is known for carrying weird international foodstuffs (may be they have this mysterious custard powder)!

Worrywart, all is lost. I made the double chocolate fudge last week and cannot find the recipe now. It was the best fudge I have ever made!!! Hopefully it surfaces soon.

Custard powder can be found in Asian and definitely in Indian grocery stores. Its processed cornflour.

Keep looking, by all means!

I just went shopping for the ingredients needed to bake MotherofTwo’s chocolate cherry cookies. I’ll either bake them tonight or tomorrow morning. Wish me luck.

I just shipped off the princess’s “Daytona 500 Party in a box” containing all her favorite goodies and enough for a large group. Also sent her Valentine gift from little brother. He’s so excited that he saved up and bought her present all by himself.

Haven’t read all the posts, but I just got back from sending package via UPS (always 2 day ground service from here) to DD. I was all set to make/send heart shaped brownies (just use a cookie cutter) as I did last year, but she informed me she had given up sweets for Lent – and the only “dispensation” she would allow herself is for her birthday next month. So, I sent microwave Annie’s mac & cheese, microwave popcorn, instant hot chocolate, and one of those Hallmark dogs that talk/ask for hugs/wag their tail when you squeeze the paw. (Even DS thought it was cute – to send her, not for himself :).)
