“Even though I hope my children have learned lessons that have to do with “doing without” material things…I know we would probably try to rush in so that they didn’t experience that level of material want.”

I know what you mean. Although my very middle class parents would have been upset if they knew I was too cheap/poor to pay for heat…although DH and I went for months without air con in our house in Richmond because we couldn’t afford to get it fixed.

ON some level it is good for them, but expectations are higher…and I want her to be safe. Glad to know Nashville is safer, I couldn’t go when she went to visit, I was there about 2-3 years ago on a business visit to the childrens’ hospital, the area seemed reasonably safe to me - it is a city, common sense should be used.

cangel,
S is currently a 2L at Vanderbilt and attended undergrad as well. For the last 2 years he has lived in an apartment building on Broadway near the law school that the school owns, the Barbizon. They are nice in terms of being clean and so close to school that it is less than a 5 minute walk to class, but not as nice as nearby apartment complexes, such as The Grove which is 10 minutes from campus off West End Avenue (D lived in The Grove one summer with a sorority sister). S had lived in nicer housing during his 2 years in the real world in DC, but opted for this option because he hardly has to move his car and can easily walk to class and the law library for study. He had long commutes in DC, so that was a big plus to him. There are nearby eateries and bars and since he had done undergrad at Vandy, he was used to utilizing The Rec for working out and going to football and basketball games as time allows. Those are a long walk or bike ride from his side of campus, but once again better than hopping in the car.

D took us by the house she will be living in this summer, which is on a side street with smaller homes. Four law students rent it from a landlord who has it decorated beautifully. She is subletting & it is a bit pricey from my midwest suburban point of view ($725/month + a quarter of the utilities) but it has washer/dryer, internet, fully furnished, nice appliances, flat-screen tv in her bedroom, etc, etc. She is wildly excited! She will be spending a lot of time searching for a place she & her school-year roommate can live in the fall … so if any of you hear about anything, please let me know! She’ll check out the two mentioned above. She enjoyed living in a flat while doing study abroad in Scotland, and she is really looking forward to cooking for herself again. The Towers were a letdown after being on her own for a semester!

D is doing LSAT prep in May & taking the test in June. She is currently interning at a music management firm (which she’ll continue doing through the summer) & isn’t sure whether she wants to go to law school right away or work for awhile first. Like others here, I wouldn’t want her to live with mice & roaches, so we would help out … but she wants to do it by herself, if possible. Fortunately, she is pretty darn resourceful. She found the sublet on Craigslist … she says the school listings are mainly property managers of apartment complexes, and she found the listings on Craigslist to be a big help.

Momofwildchild, it would be a lot of fun if the Vandy moms here could meet up sometime! So far, we just buzz in & out so quickly. I am coming over Memorial weekend, though … which will be my first leisurely visit.

My son is looking for Nashville housing for next year (his senior year), but I am dreading what he comes up with. He is a cheapskate of the highest order. There are four of them, and he says they want something with four bedrooms that is “affordable” by their standards. He is thinking “run down house”!!! I think I am about to discover the bad neighborhoods of Nashville.

First he has to line up somewhere to live for his internship in San Francisco this summer. I can’t even imagine what affordable looks like there.

I envy you VandyMoms with daughters who care about living in nice places.

Safety is priority #1 for my D … thank heavens! She loves the city but is approriately careful.

Midmo, I can only imagine what your S will find. My D’s friends at UMich live in a run-down house, but the neighborhoods are good in Ann Arbor. Nashville can be, as my D puts it, “sketchy.” But I lived in a VERY sketchy area (Flint, MI, for you Roger & Me fans) in college & lived to tell.

I haven’t been to Nashville much at all this first year…but may let you guys know next time I do. I had coffee with a Vandy Mom I met here years ago …on West End for a hour last time I was in town…it was fun meeting four years later when one of my kids started at Vandy. Such a treat.

Kathiep…was your daughter in Teach for America?

Midmo…we sort of put our foot down when eldest son “booked” a house in Durham sans speaking to us first…I went in the Durham police software and about had a stroke when I saw how many armed robberies took place on his block…and sure enough…He had to park on the street “whereever” he could and walk back to that house and there are just too many robberies after dusk near East Campus Duke. He did get housing in Durham for his senior year off campus and that was a great transition…but he was more careful about location that time.

I do think many neighborhoods…even cheap housing closer to Vandy…are relatively safe, truly.
Kelsmom…your daughter’s situation sounds so charming.
The Barbizon is a classic…and so close to anything…locationlocation. Can’t believe 2Vandymom’s son is already second year at the law school.
MomofWildChild…we talk about moving to Nashville so might be interested in your agent’s name…not imminent though so I will pm if we get more serious. Not interested in pouncing on son’s world in Nashville just yet either…but enjoying his adventures in the city and hearing about it.

faline,
No daughter is not TFA. She’s a regular teacher but there are TFA people in her school. She says they have a much better support system then she does.

Well, kathiep, Peabody probably can’t wait to meet your daughter and to get busy giving her some new tools…you must be proud of her. There are so many great places to teach, study, conduct research, observe nearby campus

My adult friend in Peabody’s graduate school is looking to sublet her “close to Vandy” apartment this summer. I believe it is very modest, because she actually resides in a different city than Nashville on holidays and summers. So if any of you are looking for short term summer sublets, let me know.

Peabody has once again been named the top education school in the nation by U.S. News:[Peabody named No.1 education grad school | InsideVandy](Inside Vandy) Won’t kathiep’s D have fun!!!

I just talked to my daughter on the phone. She had a very good visit at Vanderbilt. She loved the campus. She said that everyone she met, starting with strangers at the airport, were very friendly. She stayed overnight with parents of a girl she knew from Camp. The friend no longer lives at home so my daughter used her room. How’s that for nice?!

She liked the students she met in her program and went out with a bunch of them after class. The professors also seemed great and well connected. All of the grad students she spoke with were doing interesting things over the summer. The news about the rating came out while she was there and everyone seemed really happy about that.

She still doesn’t know about finances and is a bit uneasy about that but we’ll talk it over and help her figure out some options. All in all, sounds like it was a very worthwhile visit.

Camilla Benbow, the Dean of Peabody, is a small time rock star at my house. She has awesome credentials in gifted education and was evidently very involved in the establishment of a number of summer programs for gifted kids. S was a Duke TIPster for 3 summers and then worked as a program assistant one summer. The next summer he worked for Vanderbilt’s PTY (Program for Talented Youth). D was a PTY kid the year before her brother worked in the program. Both kids thought PTY (now Vanderbilt Summer Academy) was awesome and well organized and Dean Benbow was a presence at opening and closing ceremonies. Fast forward and my first year at D’s sorority Mom’s Weekend, I find myself poking D and whispering “that’s Dean Benbow, isn’t it?” when I spotted her at the sorority house. D confirmed and told me that her sorority sister was one of six kids. That woman has really accomplished quite a bit professionally and managed to raise six kids - I’m in awe.

Thanks for this thread. My daughter will be doing materials engineering. We will be looking for apartments in July - I guess - How soon is soon enough? Thanks

I would guess July would be about right and I’m glad that all we have to do is help with the physical move and not the looking. My guess is that my daughter will find something via Craigslist/FB or maybe from one of the grad students she met when she went down. That stuff usually works out well for her - she has friends everywhere.
