<p>Hello parents; I know a few of you have been curious to how my college choices are shaking out so I thought I’d update you and ask for any advice. </p>

<p>Well, first the good news. Pending a few more decisions, I’ve been admitted to (in a very general order of preference):
Yale EA
UC Berkeley [perhaps Regents scholar]
UCLA [likely Regents scholar, will update this Friday]
Vanderbilt [full tuition scholarship + laptop = yay, I can go to a private school]
UCI [Regents scholar]
Note: Even if I’m accepted to my other schools (MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Harvey Mudd, Carnegie Mellon (also in some vague order of preference), they’d need to pay me more than Yale to get me to go there) </p>

<p>My first choice is still Yale, however, I just received a financial aid letter from them:
Parent Contribution $15,580
Student Income $1,650
Student Assets (ouch) $15,360
Total Family Contribution $32,590
The very high student asset contribution has to do with the fact that my college fund is saved to my name. Now, the total contribution is impossible for my family to put up with. Including my assets, we could possibly make up $20k a year for college (the going price of a UC education). So that leaves a gap of about $10,000 a year to be filled with (I suppose) unsubsidized loans and/or anything else I can think of. </p>

<p>It’s better than nothing I suppose. </p>

<p>Basically, I’m lost. If it was possible to go to Yale, I would, but this sounds insurmountable. Berkeley sounds okay, but if I’m going to not go to Yale, I guess I would try to save my money for grad school by potentially going to Vanderbilt ($10k a year) or UCLA (about $13-14k a year, that is if I win the Regents). </p>
