Viking cruise around Mediterranean

One show a night is plenty and it doesn’t have to be long. I don’t need a big extravaganza! I don’t care about a casino at.all.

I guess we need to get moving if we want to do this early 2027!

That’s what’s perfect for my husband and me!

Same once on Crystal and once on Oceania. Just great. Walking around Venice is a challenge. Like a city that was designed as a corn maze. Pompeii is worth a full day. We liked the 50s funk of Naples–like NYC in the 50s. But can be sketchy. Great pizza.

Only available if both people in the room purchase it. We are a glass of beer or wine at meals is plenty types, so the spirits plan wasn’t for us. An occasional drink in the bar was extra, but we had onboard credit that covered those times.

We did a portion of that cruise in 2024, going from Venice to Rome around Italy with a stop in Croatia. It was great. We did pay extra in most ports for an excursion, but some of the included ones were quite good. The rooms are comfortable, the food is good, and they take good care of you! We did not do the Viking extension as I thought they were quite pricey. We spent the week prior to the cruise in Rome and Florence, traveling by train and then meeting up with Viking at the Venice airport. The most in-demand excursions may fill quickly, but you can sometimes get a spot at the last minute.

We did the Athens to Venice cruise on Viking a few years back. My husband needed room for his walker to get around in the cabin and bathroom so we splurged on a Jr Suite. If you are considering that, look at the cabins on the 7th deck. There’s a door directly into the forward lounge (not obvious if you don’t know it’s there), the Wintergarden lounge is right there, as is the pool. The large bathroom has double sinks and a heated towel rack.
Other advice - room service is free, so order breakfast the night before to take a lot of stress off getting ready.

We probably took half our meals as room service. And more than a few late nite snacks.

@thumper1 Have you ever been on Viking before? If it’s your first time and you’re looking at February 2027, you’ll probably have to pay in full when you complete your booking. They usually require payment one year out for first timers. Once you’re a repeat customer, you can usually defer final payment until 6 months out. Also note that your cabin category determines when your opportunity for booking shore excursions opens:

Booking opens for each guest based on stateroom category as listed below.

  • Owner’s Suite—177 days from sail date

  • Explorer Suites—167 days from sail date

  • Penthouse Junior Suites—157 days from sail date

  • Penthouse Veranda Staterooms—147 days from sail date

  • Deluxe Veranda Staterooms—137 days from sail date

  • Veranda Staterooms—130 days from sail date

On the Cruise Critic Viking Ocean forum, there are threads pinned at the top where people share promo codes, cabin selection tips and advice for new cruisers.

Only if you already have another trip booked. If you don’t, the payment schedule is the same as everyone else

Maybe not as of right. But on our Into the Midnight Sun cruise (our 2nd Viking cruise) we initially had a due date one year out, but we had our TA ask to postpone it and they let us defer to 6 months out. At that point we had not yet booked our 3rd Viking cruise, which we will be doing this December to the Chilean Fjords.

Quick question about the Midnight Sun, how rough were the North and Norwegian Seas and what time of year did you go? Several folks on our river cruise took that and said it was their favorite cruise out of the many they had taken (Viking and non-Viking) but the ocean can get pretty rough. I don’t typically get seasick but neither did they until that trip…..still worth it though they said.

We did 7/28/2025 to 8/11/2025 Bergen to Greenwich. Great cruise, maybe my all time favorite to date. We didn’t experience rough seas, although I think we were navigating around some bad weather. I remember that our private tour driver in Lerwick, Shetland Islands, said his tour the day before cancelled because the ship couldn’t anchor and he was relieved that things cleared up for us.
