We were relatively late planners, perhaps easier to do because we were willing (actually eager) to save some money staying in the lower level ‘swan rooms’. For our late Sept 2023 Rhine Getaway we put down a deposit in April, taking advantage of a free air deal. We paid in full in June.
Just signed up for our first river cruise on Viking. We snagged the last room on a cruise the end of May to Paris and Normandy. H always wanted to go to Omaha Beach and this seemed like a good way to do it. Planning to add a few extra days in Paris at the end of the trip (haven’t been to Paris in 20 years). Hope we enjoy this new experience!
We are doing that Seine cruise next spring. Starting out with the Oxford England extension pre-cruise, then staying 3 extra nights in Paris afterward.
This will be our third—Rhine in 2019, and tulip cruise last spring. You will love it.
Friends of ours just booked that trip, with the London extension. Sounds like an amazing trip.
I think it’s a must to spend time in Paris.
We thought the Viking excursion to Versailles was pretty good. We were there in November and it wasn’t overly crowded as it would be in high season.
I’m not sure if that cruise spends any time in Paris, we did cities of light which has 2 days in Paris.
We did that cruise last July, and were in Normandy on the 4th of July. We went to Paris a couple of days early (we had been before) and they were getting ready for the Olympics so it was fun to see some of those preparations, although they were starting to shut down some things. At the end of the cruise we took the Chunnel to London.
Thanks…H and I were debating about the Versailles addition (been to Versailles a few times, but not for many years) but now I’m leaning towards going.
We plan to book the extra days in Paris this weekend. The Viking extentions in Paris are sold out (we are very late booking the trip) so we will do that piece on our own.
Thanks for the comments…getting excited!. Any additional recommendations (ex. any added excursions etc.) are welcome!
We are hoping on the Rouen day, the walking town of the town center is in the AM and the optional farm tour is in the PM—wife was raised on a farm and works for her brother’s apple orchard, so a visit to an orchard in Normandy is on her list!
I found the Les frenches facebook group and YouTube channel very informative for Paris.
Interesting…on our tour the farm excursion is the same time as the Rouen tour (both AM) so we can’t do both. We did sign up for an additional chateau tour the morning before Giverny – the Giverny tour starts at 3 and it felt like we’d have too much down time if we didn’t do something before.
We are taking the Grand European in October and were looking at the London, Paris, and D-Day trip for 2027. We would use one of the 4 days in London at the start to take a train from London to Duxford where my father flew out of during WWII. There is a huge American Air museum there - it was my father’s life for 7 months in 1944!
Sounds both wonderful and meaningful!!
