Visiting/interview

Yes, you can. I’d suggest you talk with an Admission officer to arrange some time with faculty members. We visited in midsummer; geek_son had his interview and a tour. The tour guide asked him if he’d like to meet faculty in his department of interest – he ended up having lunch at a full table with a prof and a bunch of Mudders who were there for summer research. This was spontaneous, but if you talk to an Admission officer ahead of time, it can probably be arranged for your son to meet with some faculty.

Rising sophs are there taking summer math for the next two and a half weeks, and students in all grades are there on summer research for longer… your son would probably find a few of them to chat with if he hangs out in Jay’s Place around lunchtime. But again, the Admission officers would be able to help make arrangements. If you’re traveling so far, you probably don’t want to leave it to chance.

Quick things to do off campus – I’m sure some Mudders would have better ideas, but I’d suggest visiting Claremont Village (two good places to eat: Podge’s Claremont Juice Company and Pizza’n’Such). We found something to do from the flyers posted on the wall at Podge’s. All spontaneous, but worked out very well because we’d kept the day open. :)

Good luck to your son, and to you on the upcoming parental roller coaster ride of college admissions. ;)
