Have you tried dry shampoo at the crown? It lifts pretty much just where you put it. The bumble and bumble brand is very good.
I have fine hair. I swear by this stuff “Excelsior Millennia Mud Intensive Hair Reconstructor”. It was off the market for a while and I never found anything even close to how this product works. Volume without puff or stickiness and my hair feels moisturized but not weighted. My hairdresser of 30+ years noticed when I was no longer using the product and then when it became available again.
You can find it on Amazon. Yes, this is a new formulation but it still works as well as the ‘old’.
I learned today that we all need to stay away from sulfates, phthalates, and parabens!
Did any of you read the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder? Do you remember the time Pa was sleeping and dreaming that someone was cutting his hair, and he reached back and realized a mouse was chewing the hair off the crown of his head? He startled awake and threw the mouse hard against the wall, which killed it, and he had a little bald spot on his crown? That scene really freaked me out! Rodents really gross me out; I would never get over that.
YUCK!
I use Purology Pure Volume Shampoo. But, I also use a thickening cream from the Perfect Hair Day line. Bumble and Bumble makes a spray thickener also. (I dont use them all the time).
My hair has always been fine. But I used to have tons of it. Over the last several years it’s reallybeen thinning. I tried Nioxin at some point, but I really didn’t like it.
Btw, if anyone is looking for some hair fibers to thicken or cover some really thin spots, I am a big fan of Finally Hair. I get it on Amazon, but they have their own website as well. It comes in 20+ colors and I’ve really been happy with the coverage. I just use a clean spice shaker rather than a special container. Sometimes I’ll tell people I have it on and they can’t even see where it is. My only complaint is that while they have red, they don’t have a dark burgundy, which used to be one of my go-to winter colors.
@1214mom …where do you buy the thickening cream from the Perfect Hair Day line? I think that’s what I might be looking for. I don’t want to thicken The entire strand of hair, just the first 2 inches by the scalp at the crown. My hair has really thinned to. I have fine hair, but used to have tons of it, so just a little teasing at the root and it would hold all day.
@conmama, I also use the Perfect Hair Day products (when the budget permits). You can get them at Ulta, Sephora, or online from Living Proof (which offers free shipping and sometimes has good promotions - my D loves their dry shampoo and scored a free travel size with her last order).
I, too, have thick, straight hair. I can’t use conditioner at all or it is limp as a dishrag. I wear it short and cut it often, so it is very healthy. To make matters worse, my skull has a flat spot at the crown so I really need help there. I have used Paul Mitchell extra volume root lifter (purple cap on bottle) and liked it. I recently tried Big Sexy Hair Root Pump. It is a spray mousse. Both work well for me, although the Sexy Hair feels like more “product” than the Paul Mitchell.
I have very thin, flat hair. The one product that has made a world of difference for me is clarifying shampoo to get all the product out of my hair. I kept trying different mousses and gels and it seemed as though my hair kept getting flatter, but the clarifying shampoo made the difference. I also use only a tiny bit of conditioner, and rinse it immediately. And I mean immediately. Even leaving it on for ten seconds can make it more challenging to get the lift I want.
I don’t recall how I finally stumbled upon this solution, but I do know I spent hours on makeupalley.com researching reviews on all kinds of products.
Heading to Ulta today! I’ll let you all know my thoughts after using the thickening cream. Will keep the Paul Mitchell in mind, too. I’ve always liked their products. I’ve tried the styling lotion, but it doesn’t work well at the scalp. I don’t think it was meant for that.
I have thick, curly hair that was super easy to deal with for years, almost any product worked great, until I started to go grey. When I finally gave in and bought color treatment, I ended up trying dozens of color-treatment shampoo / conditioner until I settled on Tresemme - it makes it feel the way it used to when I was a younger woman.
Friend with same issue, tried lots of “products” but never found anything that JUST dealt with the crown.
She worked with her stylist to find a great cut that maximized the volume look. Maybe try that.
That’s a good idea, I think I’ll talk to her the next time about it!
Well I’m glad you’re not headed to the pet store. My typo was bad!
@conmama, as someone up thread mentioned, it’s really called the Living Proof line, and it’s available at lots of places. I got it at Sephora, but I recently bought a perfect hair day styling product in a travel size from Ulta. That size could be convenient for trying. If you find something you like, let us know.
@1214mom, I found it at Ulta and bought the thickening cream, and saw they had a mousse. Since I just want it all thicker at the crown, I wasn’t sure which I should purchase. I went ahead and bought the cream and will just apply it to the first couple inches around the scalp…I’ll let you know. It it doesn’t work I’ll try the mousse!
It worked! Just a pea size of cream on my fingertips, then rubbed into where I wanted it. It has more volume and holds the curl and tease. I don’t know why my mousse wasn’t doing that. I have been using John Frieda.
