Waitlisted Class of 2017

I was given until June 3rd. I know that admitted students have until June 1st to inform Dartmouth of deferment plans so that might lead to more wait list activity as well.

@runnerxc: my guidance counselor told me to send a short letter of continued interest around may 20th, because that was when the reply date for the first set of wait list admits was, and it would keep me fresh in their mind for the second “wave” around may 25th. She called and talked to the director of admissions, and he said that students who email every week are doing too much, and often not sending pertinent information. From that info my counselor had advised me to email every two weeks max with short concise updates.

In my opinion (which is based solely on guide books, counselors, and admissions statements- I am just a regular unhooked applicant with no “inside scoop”), I would send reassurance that Dartmouth remained your first choice. Every offer of admission that they send counts toward their yield, and with waitlisted students the try to make the yield as high as possible. Continuing to assure them of your interest and desire to attend cant hurt. I also saw a college counselor for the first time for only one hour the last week in april to help me decide where to deposit to (haha I was really confused/stressed) and she told me that typically what will happen with wait lists is the dean of admissions will say “we have ten more seats to fill, everyone bring me your top five candidates” and then each individual admissions officer will advocate for their five “top” students in their region or application reading section until they collectively agree on ten students to extend admission to. After learning that, I reached out to my direct dartmouth reader via email (which they say on the website not to do). Maybe it helped though? The college counselor was speaking in generalities -she used to work for colgate, so maybe the system is different at dartmouth

I make no assertions that I know how any of this works! Haha this is just what I have gathered from the process (which just generally sucks all around). Good luck to everyone!!!
