Waitlists -- Will this year be different?

Some one just mentioned he got off the waitlist for UTK, in state.

Would be good to know which schools are going to their waitlists…

It will be interesting to see how things go. With some kids applying to a crazy number of schools I wonder how this will all shake out - at the end of the day they can only attend one. S24 decided to stay on one WL but I’ve told him to write his LOCI and then forget about it. It’s best to spend your time on schools that want you instead of concentrating on the slim chance of getting off the WL somewhere.

U of SC has admitted students off the waitlist over the last week or so.

I think one thing schools are doing this year that I don’t recall with my older one is sending a biweekly email asking you to check a box on how likely you are to attend and whereas the majority are choosing “still deciding” they probably do get enough 'unlikely" to help them narrow yield a bit better, which is why you see some going to waitlists already (can confirm UoSC sends this email to my D24 often).

S24 was deferred from W&M ED1. He wrote a LOCI to make sure they knew it was still his first choice. He was waitlisted for regular decision, so he wrote another LOCI (with a short activities/honors update) to let them know that he would absolutely say yes if offered a spot for fall. His admissions counselor wrote back and asked him to follow up with her in April because things were so much in flux that they will not know where they stand with the waitlist until late April/early May.

She also encouraged him to get to know the colleges which have accepted him, and get excited about them. (Good advice.)

I think they must want the updates from waitlisted students to be sure they don’t extend an offer to someone who has taken W&M off the table because they finally got their financial aid info. Maybe they didn’t get enough aid for W&M or got a great deal elsewhere.

I’m confused about how this works…daughter is waitlisted at Wisco. (First choice). They have commitments due 5/15 but claim waitlist offers will start. 5/1. I would assume they are cautious about offers until after 5/15 and then they give the kids a week to accept a spot. Yikes.

My S24 is apparently staying on both of his, on a more or less, “Why not?” logic.

And actually, I have a lot of reasons I could give why not, but of course it is his call and I am just here to provide support. But I think this sort of thing is definitely adding to the chaos for all concerned.

D24 was waitlisted from Santa Clara. They recently sent an email asking her to register for either a zoom or in person 30 minute meeting about the waitlist. They indicated it was an important way for the school to indicate she was still interested. The email was very encouraging in that some of their most successful students have been from their waitlists. They are the only school that has reached out to ask her to attend something or offer any encouragement.

If a student doesn’t show interest, they likely assume they won’t have a high chance of getting them to take a spot.

I’m not sure that someone saying - it’s my #1 choice is believable - they know kids can say that to anyone.

But that they are saying it and making that effort shows something - vs. the kid who does nothing at all.

So having a zoom is a way for kids to say - sure pick me.

But the W&M person - which is who told my student - you were not admitted and to love your other schools - is good advice. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay on.

SCU’s common data set is hard to use. it’s not the normal way. But in the last two CDS (2 and 3 years ago) it looks like they offered 4849 WL and 138 were admitted and then offered 4009 spots and 8 were admitted.

Being as 1549 and 1641 enrolled, they WL a heck of a lot of people. When 16,650 applied, they WL 4009.

So look at WL for what it is - an insurance policy for them - in case they fall short. That’s why they offer it to so many - they know not everyone will join (they don’t) and even if they start making offers, the yield is likely extremely low as people will have gotten comfortable elsewhere. So sure, express the interest and if you need to do a zoom or write a letter do it - but fall in love with your other choices. Also know that most WL are need aware.

Best of luck.

Curious whether the WL might move before the commitment date for FP students. Even though everyone has more time to commit because of the FAFSA debacle, the FP students won’t be impacted by it and might just start committing earlier and giving the admissions offices better insight on where they are with the cohort who don’t need FA.

While Admissions is definitely worth to create a class, they also are working to stay within a budget, so this chunk of the class can get settled earlier. But then again, only if a large number of FP students who were offered admission respond earlier.

Yes and I’m looking at a May calendar full of AP exams, prom, and two separate 50th bday celebrations and trying to figure out how I might get a visit to Wisconsin in with just a few days notice

So Wis is the #1 choice - but the student has not been?

Yep. She’s annoying like that  we were supposed to go a few weeks ago but flights cancelled due to storm

At least she has IU - certainly a fair substitute. Frankly, with Hamilton Lugar, likely stronger.

I’m sure you’ll find a way to get there if needed!!

You can attend the 51st bday celebrations instead!!

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. D24 is my third to go through the college process and it does seem as if more people were waitlisted this year than in previous cycles (2021, 2022). Maybe it just seems that way within her peer group or HS.

With regards to SCU, I’m in favor of schools asking applicants to attend zooms, write letters, etc. to show genuine interest in attending. My daughter has several terrific options and is not relying on the waitlist for any school. However there are a few that would change things if they offered her a place.

Best of luck to everyone!
