did you ever do wake?
Yes! I think about grade deflation but not too much. I’m not really expecting pre-med to be too easy anywhere. @verycornfused
Hi! @Yami417 , I’m not sure what you are asking…?
Some schools could include UNC Chapel Hill( ranked top 30 but lower price and slightly more prestigious than Wake), William and Mary, Emory, UVA, UT Austin. If you’re into Liberal Arts colleges then Davidson and Washington and Lee might be decent options. If you’re willing to go beyond the south then colleges like Tufts, U Rochester, NYU, USC, Boston College might be similar to Wake( I would say NYU, USC, and Tufts are better than Wake at least in prestige).
Prestige is overrated and in most cases (aside from a few national brands) regional. I’ve lived in several places so am familiar with all of these schools. Live in FL. Wake is extremely prestigious in the south. Many (most) around here think USC means Univ of South Carolina (really). Also wouldn’t know if U Rochester was NY or MN. Also would have no idea what or where Tufts is.
I wouldn’t worry about Prestige. These are all excellent schools! Think about your program, fit, etc.
I was wondering - I am class of 2021 and I am interested in wake as well but I am not in the top 10% of my class as my school is EXTREMELY competitive. I have demonstrated interest in Wake (I’ve done an interview and emailed about touring and she actually mentioned how she appreciated my demonstrated interest) - my stats are decent with a 4.21 weighted gpa (we don’t do unweighted) and 7 AP classes total after HS. I am also Native American and half African American, if that means anything. I am a very thoughtful writer and I have a lot of important extracurriculars such as piano and yearbook that I am passionate about and I want to be a writer and study film. I don’t want the top 10% of my class to be a dealbreaker , although I am a bit worried. I am top 25% of my Class although that probably doesn’t mean anything . Thank you in advance !
@dricap75 Hi! I know since i’m also Class of 2021 this may not be your ideal response…but from what everyone has expressed to me and what i’ve learned about Wake through research, things like class rank aren’t a deal breaker. My class is also super competitive so i feel your struggle in that! Even though i’m in the top 5% currently, some of the smartest people I know are in the top 25% or maybe lower it doesn’t define your capability and Wake is definitely looking at the PERSON. They say this and I believe it honestly. I also think when you apply the schools get a profile about your high school where the competition may be evident. (don’t stress, easier said than done bc i am too!)Hopefully your interview went well and if you have creative essay responses i’m sure you have a good chance. Also i’ve been emailing my admissions counselor a bit in a genuine way for more info. I’m applying test optional and i’m African American! Also since Wake is a predominantly white school, we might have slightly higher chances? I’m not 100% sure. Good luck hopefully we will be there together
Thanks! I hope not it’s definitely a bit worrisome for me although I would like to think my character matters over a number!
Also, I just looked that 75% were in the top 10% which honestly isn’t as much as I anticipated. I know I’m definitely in the top quarter/half so at least I have that going for me.
@dricap75 Yup!! And so there’s definitely people accepted under that so i’d focus on that positive aspect
Wake is quite holistic in it’s admissions approach. Write really good responses to their application questions (if it’s not already too late for that). They matter a lot and are designed to show your personality, interests, etc.
I am an incoming freshman at Wake and am also a minority (Caribbean American)! I am not in the best position to give knowledge on Wake due to the fact that I haven’t even attended yet, BUT I am willing to help with the application process! Because I just recently went through the process (essay writing, worries, etc) I would be glad to take a look at your essays & am willing to discuss anything you would like to discuss.
Also, I am in a large group chat with over 700 incoming Wake students and 80+ current Wake students, so I can always get some info if you would like! PM me if interested!
I am kind of in a similar position as you all. I am not exactly sure what my chances are either.
-GPA: 4.3 (we do not have unweighted/weighted we use our own scale so my GPA may be higher if I went to a public school).
-We do not have class rank, but I am in a society for top academic performers specific so my school.
-Sports: 4 year varsity player, + club lacrosse
-Extracurriculars: Model UN, School newspaper (senior year president, but held exec board position for 3 years), Business club (treasurer), peer mentor program, math league, NHS, Science NHS, History NHS, own my own Redbubble shop (have sold over 300 products), over 100+ hours of community service.
-APs graduated with: 5 (can’t take until junior year)
-SAT/ACT: I am taking it in August, but based on practice tests it will most likely be in the mid 1400s.
-Intended major: Business/ Finance
-Ethnicity (if this helps): Caucasian (European and Middle Eastern)
If anyone could help me determine what type of school Wake would be for me, that would help. I am thinking probably a reach, but it is definitely a school I would be very happy to attend.
I have 2 daughters at Wake. Admission is very competitive. From their accounts, most of the kids are high stat kids. My daughters (senior and freshman) had ACT scores of 33 and 34. According to them, this is not unusual at Wake. It is test optional, but an ACT <30-31 will hurt you. For SAT, <1400-1450 will hurt you. As far as GPA is concerned, most of their classmates are unweighted 3.9-4.0. All have taken numerous AP’s with 4’s and 5’s. Statistically, over 75% are in the top 10%, 67% are in the top 5%. If you are a NARP (non athletic regular person), I would be willing to bet that the numbers are significantly higher. My daughters are NARP’s at Wake. Given this, the person above would be competitive to get in, but by no means would be considered a “shoe in”. The interview is extremely important at Wake and seems to carry a lot of weight. I wish all of the applicants the best of luck. My daughters are Biology majors and plan on going to Veterinary and Medical School. They both love the school, and as a parent, I do too. You will get an A+ education at Wake. I would encourage great students to apply, and as Wayne Gretzky said, “You will make none of the shots that you never took.”
