THat transit coat is really cute.
My two cents.
Lands end is not sized for juniors- the cut is too full and “mom jeans” looking.
I don’t even wear Lands End, they look sloppy on me.
Other brands have different cuts- the brands that kids like, can be more expensive, I agree- but I really like TNF, all their stuff ( and Patagonia) lasts * forever*.
My H & I still wear our Patagonia jackets that are almost twenty years old.
I wear my Denali fleece all the time.

I also like wool coats- LL Bean is cut a tiny bit slimmer than Lands End and still has good prices.
Pea coats and Princess cut coats are warm and you can layer under- as well as some some lined with thinsulate.
Living in Seattle- we layer a lot.
My D goes snowboarding with just a shell and a fleece under.
Warm boots , hat and gloves, will go a long way towards keeping warm
& the nicest coat won’t keep them too warm, unless they button it up!

Daughter goes to school in Boston, does a LOT of walking around between the campus, her job and apartment, and she flat-out refused a longer coat offered to her by a relative. She closest she has to a coat is a pea jacket. Most of the time she’s in waist-length wool jackets or the same Northface jacket worn by seemingly two-thirds of Boston’s college-age population.

That said, I think if you’re going the practical route, I’d recommend LL Bean over Land’s End. Better quality, similar prices, same excellent customer service.

Thanks so much to everyone - huge help here. I think I will show her what I had in mind, plus all of your suggestions, and let her pick (the long Canada Goose coat is very tempting, but it may be more than I should spend). The Getz site had The North Face Metropolis for $223!! I had been googling for sales on it all week and came up with nothing. That is still expensive, but more tolerable than the $279 I saw everywhere else. The Lands End Chalet is on sale for $119 - it is too bad that the cut isn’t as youthful because that sure is a nice price.
