It was an easy repair for us when our maytag dryer stopped heating and wasn’t as much as buying a new one, so we just repaired. No regrets!
I have the LGs. My neighbor showed me how she keeps a pair of tongs ne t to washer, which is so handy
I’m in the camp that I can’t imagine getting excited about washer/dryer units and my desire is simply for units that “do their job”. I don’t need frills or many options. A couple of washer settings, a couple of dryer settings.
Unless you can guarantee me a certain amount of years of service, I’m likely to not get the lowest priced model but a low to moderate model.
That said, it does seem I’ve read oodles of good reviews of Speed Queen. Again, if you can guarantee me that it will have longevity…
We bought a front loading Speed Queen washer and dryer in 2022. There are no dials. I like all of the options that are available for both the washer/dryer.
Well, as I said above, the salesman promised me that I’d never have to buy a washer or dryer again! No, he didn’t put it in writing.
You should look at the new refrigerator thread - lot’s of talk about how new appliances are not made to last like older ones were.
$185 and a new igniter later, our 24 year old Maytag Neptune dryer is back in busines!
We were lucky that our appliance repair guy was available. He walked in and said, Neptune - great machine.
I’ve had an LG frontloader for the past 8yrs (previous one lasted 16 yrs) and an LG dryer for 24yrs. No issue for parts mentioned by service people (I’ve only had the previous washer serviced once). Keeping the door open is something to deal with, but it has been a relatively good purchase. We run them pretty much everyday.
Re: parts for Samsung, I tend to agree that they seem to have a “planned obsolescence” MO. I never owned a washer from them, but a couple of their TVs and dvd players. After a set number of years, they stop producing replacement circuit boards… and most repairs don’t repair components, they just replace boards so you’re on your own once they do that.
Posting here for those interested in a new washer. Our 17 1/2 yr old Miele washer died an untimely death when power went out as it was doing a high speed cycle. Miele discontinued making full size washers for the US market because cheapo competition from the Korean makers flooded the market with their machines, so repairing the washer would have been impractical if not impossible. We decided to replace it with a front loader by Speed Queen to match the dryer I was very happy with. The machine came in today. I’m almost done with the 2 week backlog of laundry. While I mourn the elegance of the Miele and the solid SS drum with a light, this machine lives up to its name. So far, all cycles I used were under 40 minutes. The clothes came out clean, even the rags I used to wipe the dirt around the cat boxes. So far, 4 and a half stars out of 5. Half star off for no lighted drum and plastic agitator parts in said drum.
I have a Speed Queen washer and dryer. I think I’ve had them for ten or so years. Nary a problem. Real workhorses.
Only downside: Washer doesn’t have a spin-only cycle, so if I use towels to soak up a leak of some sort, I have to run them through the whole cycle.
First-world problems.
A friend just purchased Speed Queen washer/dryer and is so happy. She is not a speedy person but loves quality. She was replacing a 30 year old something so she is expecting these to last.
I purchased a Speed Queen set the first week in May. Washer has been flawless, but dryer broke less than 2 weeks in on a Thursday. Repair guy came on Friday and looked at me shocked - “Ma’am, I have this same set at home and I’ve never had a problem. We just don’t have problems with these machines.” Something about the heating element. After repair, haven’t had any issues; so, happy overall. I especially like how quiet the washer is.
I’ve posted this before: When I bought my Speed Queens, the salesperson told me I would never have to buy another washer or dryer in my lifetime.
Yeah, they are that good.
I discovered that with washers and dryers, you usually get what you pay for. Every brand has its pluses and minuses. I’ve had good luck with Whirlpool, which is made in the USA. I prefer the impeller because you can fit more clothes and clothes never get tangled. Most all washing machines are high efficiency now, which means it’s always going to use less water, but most all of them have a deep fill option too.
I love my Speed Queen with agitator which I bought right before they changed being able to set your own water level. I have had to have them replace the lid as the metal started to corrode. It was under warranty but I was surprised after all the hype.
We still have our Maytag Washer &dryer from late 1980s! It has been serviced a few times but works just fine.
I wouldn’t buy a modern Maytag. Kids’ new to them dump came with a new Maytag frontloader W/D pair. Very flimsy looking… I thought it was a Korean make until I saw it was Maytag.
Agree about new Maytag models. I had Maytag washer/dryer from the '90s in my KY house, but didn’t move them with me as condo came with Maytag pair from 2017. Maytag washer in condo became possessed when switching cycles and repair guy couldn’t duplicate, but guessed it was gear box and said repair would be more expensive than new machine. Also said he recommended Speed Queen, but I didn’t listen. Thinking that I live alone and don’t use heavily, I bought a new Maytag washer last December. Knew I absolutely hated it immediately which is why I did something completely atypical for me and decided to just abandon new loud & problematic Maytag washer and dryer that was working fine and bought Speed Queen set earlier this year. No regrets, but tell this story to discourage anyone from buying present day Maytag sets. Completely agree about the poor quality of their units now.
Yes, OLD Maytag are totally different from anything currently available. Wouldn’t buy one now—sounds like Speed Queen still makes good machines.
We’ve had the SQ dryer for 7 years now. Very well made. Dries clothes perfectly. So far, the new washer has been doing a good job… hope the washer lasts!
