Washington and Lee vs Tufts

I have not visited Tufts in at least a decade (D22 and D24 have friends there though), but I was under the impression that the MBTA now has a Green Line stop for Tufts in addition to the Red Line in Davis Square.

I stand corrected. It seems they’ve expanded the E line past Lechmere. Whaddya know.

Not sure how much impact that will have on the kids going into the city, but at least they can. But I guess they always could.

Good lookin’ out.

You should check out the rome2rio app. Handy dandy for getting travel/transportation info to/from just about anywhere worldwide.

Apparently so, given that I live here and don’t remember them extending the Green Line.

Or forgot due to old age

Tufts is nearly twice as selective as W&L and likely attracts a lot of full-pay families. And, they’re in a high COL region. So, they’re in a position to charge what the market will bear.

Whether their proximity to Boston is a feature or a bug really depends on which audience they are appealing to. To fellow NESCAC colleges, the onus has always been to disprove that they are a suitcase school on the weekends (they probably aren’t.) That being said, there’s a world of difference between needing a car to buy a carton milk and being blocks away from a mass transit system. This should be a very easy decision.

I have never heard Tufts described as a suitcase school. Just because it isn’t known for wild parties doesn’t mean kids clear out every Friday!

I have never heard of Tufts being described as a suitcase school either.

The city does siphon some of the activity and energy away from the campus, especiallyfor upperclassmen. It’s easy to go to hear music, dine, whatever – off campus. For many students, this is a plus. For those looking for a really robust campus social scene where almost everything happens on campus, the distraction of the city isn’t a positive.

My family members who attended Tufts never described the “distraction of the city”. Boston is an opportunity- reduced or free priced museum and performance tickets, hundreds of very cool volunteer opportunities, dozens of meet up’s for various hobbies and interests with college students from other institutions.

Tufts kid doesn’t want that? Enough going on on campus to keep you busy!

At this point, I think we are all talking amongst ourselves.

If politics important to you
Tufts is leaning heavy left
W&L is much more conservative with some religious kids
 Some may have different opinions.

The OP logged on about a half hour ago. So apparently seems to be reading right along
..

@Giganticgroundhog several of the schools you mentioned in your other thread are in the south. Are you ?

In another post OP also mentioned FSU, UF, VaTech (and not playing a sport).

OP if you would like advice, can you clarify things?

Boston is a huge part of the Tufts social life (debatably the top college city in the nation). While Davis Square is technically medford, it is steps from Cambridge
and Cambridge and Boston are pretty much the same. When I go to dinner in Boston, 50/50 it is Cambridge. It is all one street - Mass Ave.

This is true no matter what OP chooses.

Without more specific information about your preferences and career goals, would you rather be in/near a major metropolitan area or in an intimate, rural, isolated location ?

As noted above by almost every poster, the school cultures are quite different–if you like one, you probably would not like the other. Very important for prospective students to understand W&L’s campus culture due to its status as a small, isolated (rural) school; much more social flexibility at Tufts University due to its size & location.

Beyond the issue of COA, it is a matter of personal preference. And, personal preference should not be overlooked in this specific situation.

You are correct. There is a Green Line stop on campus that runs directly into Boston. It couldn’t be easier to get to the city.
