Yeah I’m not sure about the loans part. It never hurts to ask. When I was in the FinAid office as an admitted student last year me and my mom asked the counselor for 10k more per year and he just sorta blinked… looked at the computer and said “I think we can do that.” Now I was still OFFERED loans, but they never can make you take them out. So if your EFC is 40k, and they lower it down AND give you loans, you can just not take out the loans (increasing out of pocket expense but decreasing long term debt and eliminating interest based payments).

^^To me, the loan portion always means “this part is up to you, but we can help you get a loan”. I don’t think plumazul meant she didn’t want to see a loan portion in the FA pacakge. She just won’t actually take out a loan. She would probably just calculate that as part of the out-of-pocket expense in her comparison of the various offers. I think she already got a full-ride merit scholarship from a wonderful school. I’m in the same boat. I don’t want D to take out any loan. I will loan her the money myself from my retirement funds, if it comes to that.

@Masra,

Thanks for the reply, … you give me some hope. My dad suggests that IF I am admitted to H or P, then I could send my FA award to WashU and see if they will match it … I WOULD choose WashU if they did … H has a 10% of income policy which is doable …

@soze,

Did I say something to offend you? Let me tell you what I believe …
- I believe that the FAFSA system is BROKEN, it’s capricious and arbitrary in the EFC calculations … IF you make $200K or more you will NOT pay over 25% of income to go to WashU, if you make less than 70K you will pay 10 to ZERO% of income to attend YET those in the middle are expected to pay up to 50%?!? (in my family’s case 45%) What is THAT about? Do YOU think that is fair?

2) I BELIEVE in markets. My state flagship school thinks I’m worth a free ride PLUS a $3K stipend, I’ve also received a generous offer from another top ten school. IF I am admitted to H or P they ALSO are VERY generous, THAT is the market … do you think I am unreasonable to ask for a MARKET bid? Isn’t that how the world works?

That’s really smart - also what my mother does for me. And remember guys, WashU is a competitive school in many senses of the word. If you have a great scholarship from another really good school (use your judgement if its comparable or not) WashU will work to match scholarships and money.

My best friend got full rides at LACs like Kenyon, Occidental, and others and used them to get more money out of WU. So if you really like WU try to milk them for all they’re worth
It’s WashU tradition.

@JJParent,

Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. I don’t always express myself well, … I’m working on it :)

No you didn’t offend me at all.
But, it does seem like you’re asking for them to take funds away from students who are willing to take loans (and trust me, that’s what they are doing when they give you more money, they are taking it away from someone else) and give it to you, so you don’t have to take a loan.

If I’ve misstated your position, well I’m sorry.

I mean when the SFS budget is pretty liquid and can increase or decrease as needed, even during a Fiscal Year. While it’s true that on some level if he takes more money then someone else gets less… WashU still meets 100% demonstrated financial need. If that other student also needs more than they get from the demonstrated need formula, they too should be able to ask for more.

And if he doesn’t take a loan or asks for no loans that won’t take away anymore than anyone else - they will simply remove the loans from his package or he won’t take the loan from the package they offered.

Does this mean that students with parents making 200,000 should be able to ask for full rides? No way! I just don’t get the feeling that that is the case with plumazul and a lot of WU kids. And if that is the case, I’m pretty confident that good ole Bill Witbrodt will laugh them out of the room.

Believe me, wash u is far less manipulative than an Ivy school hot on the trail of a D-I athletic prospect with half-way decent board scores. That cutthroat arena makes this all look like a tea party.

80K EFC = Death.

Okay someone explain to me what EFC is?

Thanks.

A click is worth a thousand words … :)

Give it up! You are way beyond sour grapes on not getting into WUSTL. You are clearly not stupid though your writing suggests hubris and a tremendous lack of experience. Pick one of the 12 and move on. Otherwise we must all conclude that you really did want to go to WUSTL. If that is the case call up a dean or asst. dean of admissions and ask them why you did not get accepted. If you want, transfer in a year or two. But please, get on with your life.

EFC = Expected Family Contribution = How much you’re going to have to get from family/loans/scholarships. And then the school will be the rest. Hopefully you know this already though since some schools wanted the FAFSA last month?

Hahaha, 99999K EFC. Very precise. :)

I liek Hahvud. It rimes wit Thahmud.

^^ hahaha altruition

Incidentally WashU is also the name of an anime character who is supposedly the ‘world’s greatest science genius.’ xD Very interesting coincidence with a school that is big in the sciences!

So plumazul, I see you got a string of acceptances, including those from WashU and Duke. Have you decided where you are matriculating next year? Congrats by the way.

I just wanna say that Jamaica, you got PWNED. And Masra91, that was EPIC WIN. Wash U is awesome regardless (that’s why I’m a freshman here and not anywhere else). XD

You just bumped a 6-month old topic. Good job.
