Watching out for sneaky charges

Timely thread … I just got notified by my credit card fraud alert department that somebody tried to charge $2000 at a pizza parlor using my number!! Makes me wonder who and where they got my info…I would be interested in the Shopsafe info as well because I do like to shop online sometimes. It’s a creepy feeling when someone has your credit card info.

Discover Card has one-time-use card numbers too. They’re easy to use (online) and the services is free.

What can you buy at a pizza parlor what could justify a $2000 charge? Nice to know the credit card algorithm picked THAT one up…

The oven?

I have to enter my zip code into the card processor when I buy gasoline now. I also have to answer three questions to log into my credit union account. There are times when I’d prefer a challenge-response device but a friend told me that even those can be hacked by someone breaking into your house to steal your device. It happens in Europe.

I get paid every two weeks, and have an automatic payment set up for my credit card every two weeks, just to deal with the payment due date/late posting of payment/closing date issues. I set this up because I, too, got dinged by a credit card company for a late payment. (Funny how the money had already been withdrawn from my bank account, but didn’t show up as a payment on the credit card yet!) Ticked me off, so I set up payment every two weeks. If I haven’t charged anything, I cancel the payment.

As God as my witness, I’ll never pay a credit card late fee again!

I keep getting a charge from AOL for $3.95, about 2 years after I discontinued their service. They say it’s not them, that it’s a “3rd party provider.” I keep telling them I don’t care, it has their name on the charge.

I’d close the account of whatever they are charging or ask my cc or checking account to refuse payment.

OMG! What is Verizon’s problem? Why does it take 8 weeks to send me a credit when I pay MY bills on time?

It took me 25 minutes navigating voice mail and waiting on hold before I actually talked to a person. Maddening!

You should try getting hold of their billing when you’re in another state.

I had this happen with O Magazine. I got this really nasty letter in the mail stating that they automatically renewed my subscription per my request (huh?) and needed the bill paid. Since I pay my bills by check (I rarely use my CC for billing purposes), I simply called the subscription phone number and cancelled my account (after years of getting the mag without hassle.) It just irked me to no end to be told that I had requested automatic renewal. I suppose the auto renewal was somewhere in the small print on my bill, but this was the first time I encountered auto renewal and obviously missed it.

Another pet peeve is to get a bill to renew a subscription that is months, and sometimes more than a year, from expiration. What a waste of time and resources. This also happens when I make a donation. I actually told one of the charities to which I donate that if they ask for the money too soon, then they won’t get any more money from me. They backed off and send their request about a month prior to the one year anniversary of my last donation.

HImom - PayPal offers one as well. The biggest issue I stumbled on with the PayPay one was a merchant wanted the 3 digit code on the “card” and of course there is no card and thus, no code. There was no way to get around it, so I ended up using my own card. No issues with that vendor, but I do like the “use once” concept.

I for one love the feature of having to enter my zip code into the card processor at the gas station. Not many thieves are memorizing zip codes!

Discover Card gives you a new 3 digit code each time. The expiration date remains the same.

I had recently signed up for text fraud alerts so I was glad they texted me to let me know about the $2000 charge at a pizza parlor LOL They texted me to call and asked me if I charged anything at XYZ Pizza (never heard of them) so when I said no they told me how much it was…kind of funny but sad. They said my card was then attempted on itunes so I guess somebody was trying to have a big party with pizza and tunes!
Seriously though, the pizza place had to be a front or something because when would they ever take a card for $2000 without asking for id or checking with the card company? Scary though. I have been checking all of my other accounts daily to make sure some idiot isn’t trying to use my other cards.

Shopsafe provides time limited, credit limited numbers with the three digit security code.
See [ShopSafe Service: Safe Online Shopping from Bank of America](<a href=“Privacy & Security Center at Bank of America”>Privacy & Security Center at Bank of America)
Discover provides temporary credit card numbers, but without user defined credit limit.
Paypal will accept Shopsafe numbers, but will balk at frequent number changes.

Some credit experts recommend requesting a new credit card number every year from your credit card issuer while retaining the same account. No net effect on your credit, but it will cut off any ghost recurring charges and force you to update any desired recurring charges.

At Discover Card, you lose all of your history if you change account numbers. This is important if you go with electronic statements only.
