I just happened to go over family history with my late dad’s cousin the other night. Learned all about his dad coming across the pacific from the trans Siberian RR, while the rest of the family came across the Atlantic. Was an interesting conversation.

Side story-- went to grad school with John Jakes’ daughter. It was during the time he was well known for writing The Rebels, The Seekers, The B*stards. Etc. Went to her wedding at his home on Hilton Head.

Another side story : I was a big fan of Jakes’ bicentennial series, which came out when I was in high school. Jakes lived in my hometown then. Our school performed a science fiction play he wrote (Stranger with Roses–I was in charge of props for the play) and he came to see it. I don’t think he liked it very much–he said something like, “It wasn’t exactly how I envisioned it…”
