My favorite from this genre will always be St. Louis. WorshU is how WashU is pronounced. But everything in St. Louis is a German pronunciation of a French word. My fav is Gravois Avenue pronounced either “graa-voise” like the oise in noise or “gra-voy”. I’ve heard both and I’m no longer sure which is more local, lol. But I sure got it wrong when I tried to pronounce it in the French way!
Pacific University in Oregon, not to be confused with University of the Pacific in California!
I actually googled this when I first saw the link! I knew of the university of pacific but not pacific u!
It appears that I’ve been pronouncing Oregon close to correctly, but never knew I was mispronouncing the state of Washington!
Another thing I learned today!
Indiana has a bunch of things like this. The one that kills me the most is the town of Versailles…pronounced vir - sales!
To try and bring this back to the thread topic, though, perhaps if these moves make any podcasts or national news, more people will learn the local pronunciations for places that are frequently mispronounced?
Years ago, there was a contestant on Jeopardy from Versailles, IN. Alex, who was bilingual in French, pronounced it the French way. The contestant corrected him and pronounced it Ver-sales.
It’s pronounced Vir-sales in Kentucky, too!
And in Missouri.
And Pennsylvania.
Upstate NY is full of differently pronounced versions of foreign cities. My favorite might be Delhi (pronounced Del-high). But there are several others as well.
Feel free to start a new thread on pronunciation but please get back on topic. TIA!
Appalachian School of Law looking to merge with Roanoke College
Yet another graduate only University closing down. This time in Illinois as Lake Forest Graduate School of Management will shutdown after the spring
I assume this is not affiliated with Lake Forest College ?
I just looked it up. LFGSM started out as a component of the college but has long been independent of the college.
Augustana College acquiring Trinity college of nursing and health sciences. Yet another Illinois based merger/ closure.. who’s next? Roosevelt University and maybe Columbia College of Chicago? Merger? Wonder if those two can survive with the enrollment declines they are dealing with.
Earlham College announces significant staff reductions in an effort to achieve financial stability and eliminate the college’s structural deficit.
Sad but one has to hope, pain now will lead to long term strength.
But these types of stories probably are not helpful for future recruitment.
It does not bode well for the future, IMHO.
I will say that Earlham is another school that is going about things in the right way.
Those who received the notices this week are being given 6 to 15 months of advance notice to facilitate a “helpful period of transition.” Affected hourly staff, administrative faculty, and nontenured teaching faculty will conclude their employment June 30, 2026, with tenured teaching faculty concluding a year later
And of the 109 positions cut, more than half were already going to be empty, with “only” 47 impacting people still in the positions:
Sniegowski said 31 other positions were eliminated through attrition from a hiring freeze in place since May, 22 positions were eliminated through voluntary separations and early retirements this fall, and nine positions were reduced through other retirements.
Earlham seems to be doing things in a very thoughtful manner, and I believe its endowment is significant enough that it has the time to turn the ship around while remaining true to its essence. Of course, it seems that much of its $400 million endowment is restricted, as the unrestricted portions have largely been spent down (from Earlham’s FAQs linked in the article). But I think its intention to widen its recruiting efforts beyond a small regional footprint is wise, and I’m wishing them the best.
Northpoint Bible College in Massachusetts on a watch, might close as its accreditor review it’s accreditation.
They are on a watch list of colleges that might close. It includes Boston Baptist college, Anna Maria College and Montserrat College of Arts.
