Weather as a criterion in choosing a boarding school

One of my teachers was joking that the quality of the incoming freshman class depends on how good the weather is on the revisit days.

Unfortunately, this week, our revisit days are on Wednesday and Friday, both of which are in the 40s to 50s…meanwhile, today has a high of 68.

That seemed to be the consensus when I lived on the Gulf Coast.

If it reassures you:

  1. after a while, one gets used to it.
  2. you can ALWAYS put on more clothes.

If you prepare right, you can withstand the elements. (I accidentally took my kid polar camping once. By “accidentally” I mean that the plan wasn’t to sleep in a tent during an ice storm. Kid loved it.) When I lived in the Midwest without a car and no Sunday public transit, I realized there is a reason to favor practical over fashionable footwear when walking to church in subzero weather.

A few years back someone posted from Southeast Asia about their son’s choice of St Cloud MN or Texas. I was a little concerned that winter in St Cloud Minnesota might be a real shock. Also, quality winter clothes are not cheap, and don’t pack up small! That should be a calculation considered, if $ are tight.

One year, it was in the 70s on our first revisit day and snowed on the second. I asked an AO if yield was higher on the warm day, but he said it surprisingly wasn’t!
