the rocket scientists here closed school the beginning of the week using the last snow day built into the calandar (when the roads were fine by 8 am); soooo, this morning, they risk everyone’s life and limb by NOT closing…we do not attend the public schools but puuullllleaaase!!!

so let me get this straight; you’ll save your vacation but end up spending February mending in the hospital from all the car accidents??

dogwood: our driveway is a downward hill too!! we can get out but good luck getting back in before we clear it…

The college I work at did NOT close today…I felt like the only shlub going to work today. Thumper, you can have your New England winters, fine, but NJ is not New England!

Our houses are so close together and have no front yards; we’re definitely running out of places to put the snow, requiring a lot of carrying to get the snow someplace; there’s a wll of snow in front of our house so high the first floor is hardly visible. (up side of going to work is that H, with snow day, got stuck with all the shoveling.)

Chicago here - I’ve only run the snowblower a couple of times so far, choosing to sweep or shovel the smaller amounts. But due to overnight freezing, my drive has been an ice patch for weeks. I chip away at it every day. Made some progress today. I know how it feels to be (seemingly) permanently assigned to a snow crew - I feel for you easterners!

My poor Lab is not amused at the snow up to her shoulders–nor am I thrilled with having to shovel out a pooping spot for her so many times. Today I just gave up on shoveling a path from the street to the mailbox because I couldn’t face the prospect. Sorry, US Postal Service. The only upside this winter is that many of the snowfalls have occurred overnight, with the streets all plowed by rush hour. The street are getting narrower and narrower, though. I don’t remember ever seeing so much snow with so little melting.

Meanwhile, D has had numerous classes cancelled already this semester. Experience with last year’s “Snowpocalypse” taught us that these missed classes will never be made up–too hard to find a time that’s good for everyone, I guess, though I don’t see why a few 6 am make-ups wouldn’t do just fine! When I calculate how much each of those cancelled classes cost us, I want to weep.

Also running out of room where to put the snow from in front of the garage - the 5’ wide strip between our driveway & the neighbors already has a pile that’s 8’+. I went to the mall tonight - I think those mountain will be with us through April, possibly May, at this rate!

My son has noted the ‘big’ dumps have occurred on the 26th of the month. We’re on a small island on Feb 26th and that the plane that brings us home arrives just a few hours earlier from Newark. I won’t be too upset if I have to spend another day there as long as we don’t have to sit in the airport.

I abandoned my car yesterday on my commute home from DC. I was doing fine until someone was stuck and blocking the entire road. Sat there for literally over an hour not moving. Tried to help push, plows came, one plow got stuck in a ditch… just a big mess. Left the car on the wrong side of the road in a turn lane (I had moved over to the other side to let one plow pull the other plow out of the ditch). A very nice lady gave me a ride home, would’ve been a really long walk in my work clothes (4+ miles). Went back and got the car today today.

garland, I went to work today too so you weren’t the only one! My company delayed opening till 10… I delayed myself a little bit longer and went in at 10:45. Mental note to go in 45 minutes early tomorrow… The nice thing was by the time I got there all of the roads were clear.

The school board thought they’d be smart this year and double the snow days so they could give back days instead of take away. Guess what? We’re up to 5 snow days (at least 1 could have been early dismissal and 1 a 2 hour delay, but oh well) and they’ve reserved 6. Any more than 1 snow day and they’re talking about the first day of spring break, a Monday, the 3rd day of spring break, a Wednesday, and the Monday after school ends (June 27). Yeah, right, like any of that will have more than a small number of students and teachers present.

Don’t forget that we in the metro area not only have snow in February and March but ice storms in March and early April. Just 92 days until May 1st!

I have two kids in schools in the Chicago area. Where’s their snow? It’s mistakenly all been dumped here. I sent an email last night to our Town manager asking if he would see if a crew from Public Works could move some of the snow at an intersection leading from my neighborhood to a main road. They’ve piled it up so high on the corner that you can’t see anything as you try to turn onto the main road. It’s “pray and go” right now.

garland, I hemmed and hawed about where it belonged, but under the circumstances felt it more appropriate as a weather incident. Obviously, if it was indeed confirmed as a yeti, the bragging thread would be the proper venue. Plus, if the carcass was identifiable, I’d also be able to add a few notables to the “Famous People I (Almost) Met” discussion as no doubt I’d have had access to some noted scientists, talk-show hosts, Nobel Prize nominees and other assorted A-listers.

By all means, please invoke your moderator’s mandate to place the post in the most appropriate discussion.

(OT, I had entertained recounting d’s accomplishments on the bragging thread but figured I’d let sleeping toads lie.)

You know, violadad, we always love hearing about your D’s exploits. It helps put ours in perspective. I’m not quite sure which instrument, school, religious deity, etc., she settled on.

And I must brag here, that I may be the only CC’er to ever quit the moderatin’ gig and live to tell the tale. So you’ll have to go otherwheres to get your posts in order. I am oh-ficially retired.

Ok, pardon my Southern ignorance…I have a professional job, but we’re still supposed to show up! How does it work when you guys are snowed in? Do you just use your vacation days? Or is it just “come if you can and no one cares”?

I lived in Ft Worth for a while and on occasional ice storm days the “big boss” used to say “those who WANT to be here will find a way” so I drove 5 mph terrified the whole way! No way I could have done that on a regular basis though! It was noon before my fists unclenched.
